Description of Job

Weekday availability 7:30 am-6 pm, Saturday availability 8 am-12 pm.

Performs day-to-day professional pharmaceutical operations of the department which includes drug acquisition, distribution and monitoring, identifying, resolving, and preventing drug-related problems that may affect optimal resident care outcomes, and research and communication to our medical and nursing staff, as well as to all ancillary services. The Pharmacy Technician position will assist the Pharmacists with filling and compounding, delivery and shipping, drug procurement, billing, filing, and auditing activities.

Duties to include but not limited to:

General Operations- Dispensing/Inventory

Under the direction of a Pharmacist, the position fills and distributes prescriptions to the different neighborhoods at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons for residents and/or prepares the prescriptions to be sent out to the other facilities that are served by the Veterans Community Living Center Pharmacy. Once a pharmacist approves prescription(s), the position may be asked to bill the insurance company. Position prints delivery manifests and maintains the delivery records. Position orders medication stock to ensure par levels are maintained, and control inventory costs, package medications, mix intravenous solutions, fill, re-fill, price, and label prescriptions, fax refill requests. Process refills into the computer and associated insurance billing. Maintains inventory of drugs, chemicals, or other controlled substances and helps to ensure their security. Prices prescriptions, and inputs resident information into the computer. Resident data includes such data as resident name, prescribed medication, and cost to maintain pharmacy files, insurance system, and inventory. This position answers phone calls and handles those duties that don't require a licensed pharmacist, including problem-solving. Position handles returns and outdated medications as well as the drug waste process.

Data Collection and Billing Reconciliation

Retrieves, corrects, or deletes previously entered data where necessary. Reconciles insurance payments with resident billings.

Patient /Resident Services

Maintain attention to the resident's needs and protect the safety of the resident. Anticipate future needs and or problems of residents and take action to meet these needs

Delivery and Maintenance

Prepares and organizes medications to be delivered to in-house nursing stations or remote facilities via the shipping process. Maintains pharmacy devices including but not limited to fax machines, automated dispensing systems, medication carts, glove box unit aseptic techniques of countertops, and dispensing stations. Cleans, sterilizes, and or disinfects areas and/or equipment.

Must have Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Intern License

Experience:

  • Two years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • Current, valid certification or provisional certification as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern from the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:

  • Current, valid certification or provisional certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy.

Substitutions:

NONE

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in long-term care pharmacy or willingness to learn

  • IV admixture experience or willingness to learn.

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned instead of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant's prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation instead of termination, and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
