Christiana Pharmacy Department is currently recruiting for a full time Certified Pharmacy Technician. This position is also required to work every other weekend and is a day/evening shift rotating position. Holidays as required.

The Christiana Hospital Pharmacy and the Wilmington Hospital Pharmacy operate 24 hours a day.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, performs assigned duties in support of the Pharmacy Department with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness and patient safety.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the pharmacist in providing timely, efficient, cost effective, and appropriate pharmaceutical care to the patient.

  • Refills patient medication bins through robot cart fill and manual picks; updates carts by including new orders, removing discontinued medications, and transferring medications Updates labeling of patient medication bins on admission, transfer and discharge of patients.

  • Delivers and exchanges 24-hour cart fill to nursing units at scheduled times. Checks medication storage areas for discontinued and discharged patient medications. Ensures that returned medications are placed back into stock.

  • Reorders medications in short supply and restocks picking station and other areas of the pharmacy. Maintains a clean and orderly work area; checks periodically for overstocked and outdated medications.

  • Fills floor stock orders and delivers to nursing stations. Restocks floor stock area. Receives and checks incoming supplier orders. Performs floor stock billing. Manufacturing/prepackaging; as required.

  • Answer telephone and greet personnel coming to pharmacy in a courteous and friendly manner. Refers problem and drug information inquiries to the pharmacist.

  • Prepare medications through appropriate compounding procedures and aseptic sterile techniques in accordance with USP 795, 797 and 800 in a timely manner.

  • Makes rounds of nursing areas for medication drop-off and pick up discontinued medications.

  • Sends prepared medications to nursing areas via pneumatic tube system on a timely basis for STATS and missing doses if the medication can be tubed. All routine medications will be hand delivered to patient bin.

  • Orient and train new pharmacy personnel.

  • Manage AcuDose inventory, including accurate selection and loading of medications.

  • Inspects medications at nursing units, including refrigerators and AcuDose machines. Ensures that medications are stored properly and that only in date medications are stored. Removes discontinued medication.

  • Recommends improvement of methods and procedures to supervisor.

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned for emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform to maintain appropriate level of pharmacy service.

  • Maintains a current knowledge of all departmental safety procedures

  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and/or visitors.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) is required

  • A minimum of one year of pharmacy technician experience required

  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred

  • Knowledge of generic and trade names of formulary drugs

  • Ability to type and perform basic math calculations

  • Computer experience preferred

  • Strength and endurance is necessary to push the medicine carts back and forth to nursing stations

These positions may be based at the Medical Arts Pavilion I, Middletown, or Foulk Road locations. Incumbents in these positions will be required to float to different Out-Patient sites. Hours are 7:30 to 4:00 Monday through Friday and every third Saturday for four hours with a start time of between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Primary Function: To interview, register and order laboratory tests along with processing patient specimens on outpatients in the system wide Outreach Laboratory sites. To perform venipunctures, fingersticks, and/or heelsticks on in and outpatients to obtain blood for testing. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: * Performs successful venipuncture, micro-procedure and bleeding times using established procedures on adult and pediatric patients * Interviews and registers outpatients accurately in the HIS, recognizing the use of the alternate guarantor for geriatric patients, obtaining the correct insurance information and patient signature on any required forms by utilizing the Compliance Checker as appropriate * Follows established procedures for proper identification of patients, greeting all patients in a courteous manner introducing self and calling patient by name * Properly labels and processes patient specimens prior to arrival in clinical laboratory * Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients, including the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and to provide the care needed * Interprets physician's oral and written test orders in an accurate manner * Follows-up with physician's office to clarify any confusion or question, including resolution of any medical necessity and/or diagnosis issues * Handles all telephone requests in a courteous manner, documenting the call * Selects correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS * Works cooperatively with lead phlebotomy specialist and co-workers and maintains a good rapport with other departments * Performs successful heelsticks, using established procedures, on neonates and infants * Plates patient specimens for microbiology cultures * Transports patient specimens to clinical laboratory as necessary * Performs Point of Care Testing (POCT) on Glucose ToleranceTest (GTT) patients * Rotates working schedule as needed within CCHS as required * Maintains daily log sheets * Collects master white billing forms and delivers to Cashier * Maintains supplies and adequate inventory of medications * Reviews Safety manual and Infection Control manual annually. * Completes all mandatory in-service education * Attends departmental in-service meetings as required * Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices.
