Job Summary / Job Purpose

Responsible for centralized compounding workusing safe IV room practices, large volume end-product batching (IVPB,syringes, etc.), compounding total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and peripheralparenteral nutrition (PPN), and end-product quality assurance. Oversees Pyxisconsole.

Performs the manual technical tasks involved with the proper storage,distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs, associated record keeping andpatient charging systems. Works under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist.Follows proper procedures for the operation of equipment and use ofsupplies. Maintains and coordinatessystems to ensure that pharmacy operations run efficiently on a day-to-daybasis.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

Education / Accreditation / Licensure(required & preferred):

High school/GED

State Pharmacy Tech License required

PTCBnational certification required.

BLSCertification preferred

Experience (required andpreferred):

One year pharmacy tech experiencepreferred.

Oversees Pyxisconsole. Performs the manual technical tasks involved with the proper storage,distribution, packaging and labeling of drugs, associated record keeping andpatient charging systems. Works under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist.Follows proper procedures for the operation of equipment and use ofsupplies. Maintains and coordinatessystems to ensure that pharmacy operations run efficiently on a day-to-daybasis. Essential Functions * Assistspharmacist in providing pharmaceutical care to include (but not limited to): o Preparing, filling and distributingmedication o Screening phone calls/orders andalerting the pharmacist to patient-specific data indicating * Pre-packagestablets, capsules and liquids into single-dose units. Prepares labels withmedication name, strength, lot number and expiration date. * Obtainsnarcotics from Pyxis vault. Prepares narcotics for rounds and files requiredpaperwork. Participates daily in narcotic audits on the units. * Overseesand troubleshoots Pyxis console o Communicates changes to pharmacy staff o Serves as liaison between Pyxis andPharmacy o Manages Pyxissecurity, adding and deleting users o Trains staff on system changes andupgrades o Notifies vendor/CHI of system problems o Maintains adequate levels of stockdrugs in Pyxis dispensing system on nursing units * PrepareIV medications under the supervision of the pharmacist o Prepares IV admixtures, TPNs,chemotherapy IVs, IV piggybacks, and syringes. o Utilizes aseptic technique in thepreparation of all sterile products. o Performs end-product testing qualityassurance o Documents completed work by initialingall labels/logs/etc as required. o Completes IV room re-certificationprocess by assigned deadline. o Cleans and documents as assigned. o Credits to the patient and restockusable IVs returned to the inpatient pharmacy. o Inventories and orders selectedsupplies. o Follows the ordering/restocking systemto stock/restock IV room medications and supplies. o Prepares and appropriately labelsstock sterile products. o Coordinates the supply ofinvestigational products. * Repackagesand labels bulk oral solid and liquid drugs into unit-dose form underpharmacist supervision. Reconstitutes drugs and prepares compounds underpharmacist supervision. * Deliversmedications, IV's and controlled substances on a daily basis to replenishinventory levels. Requires interpretation and judgment to assure accurate andpractical inventory levels. * Performsmonthly patient care area inspections and reports as assigned by the manager. * Completescharges/credits daily for billing. * Checksand restocks patient care and special care stock supplies (i.e. emergency drugsto crash carts and heart carts) under pharmacist supervision. * Performsduties in documented accordance with requirements of all regulatory andgoverning bodies. Mandatory education from a system and department level iscompleted. * Maintainswork areas and equipment/utensils in a neat, clean, and orderly appearance. * Performsother duties as assigned by management.
