Description:

SUMMARY

Directs and coordinates day-to-day operations in assigned areas of the Pharmacy to meet the pharmaceutical needs of the patients and assists the Manager for the administration of all pharmaceutical services.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Minimum: Bachelor's degree in business or science desirable.

Preferred: MBA

Credentials/Licensure

Minimum: Licensed and Certified Pharmacy Technician

Preferred: Lean or Six Sigma training/certification

Related Experience

Minimum: Two to three years previous supervisory experience in pharmacy operations. Completion of SMHC Essential Skills for New Leaders and Foundations in Leadership or equivalent experience and external development.

Preferred: Track record of successful use of Lean or Six Sigma for operations improvements. Long Term Care

Pharmacy Experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum: Background in information systems required.

Preferred: Specialized training or experience with conflict resolution, mentoring, or negotiation skills is desirable.

Background in purchasing, materials management, and inventory management.

Computer Competency

Shows how to use (through a competency assessment) a standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical/Mental

Minimum: Sit, stand, stoop, twist, walk (30% - 80% of work time). Lift, carry, push pull objects weighing up to 10 lbs. (10% of work time). Perform detailed tasks with frequent interruptions & changing priorities (80% of work time). Hear speech and distinguish sounds; speak loudly and softly; utilize near vision; fine motor skills and manual dexterity.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises and coordinates the day-to-day activities in a designated Pharmacy, within parameters delegated by the Pharmacy Manager, to assure quality pharmaceutical products and services are delivered to patients.

Ensures that staff follow proper procedures to assure patients receive the correct drug therapy at the proper time and that appropriate legal records and requirements are maintained.

Assures an adequate inventory of all pharmaceuticals and supplies.

Collaborates with the Pharmacy Manager to develop, write, revise and implement departmental policies, procedures and protocols.

Communicates and collaborates with staff, management, various departments within Saint Mary's and outside professionals such as customers, representatives and community pharmacists. Interviews vendor representatives for product availability and information.

Provides input for decisions in the areas of ongoing program development, activities and functions, such as procurement and inventory control, data processing and distributive systems.

Interviews and recommends candidates for hiring. Completes evaluations and recommends merit increases relating to subordinate performance.

Makes recommendations regarding wages, and/or terminations of subordinates. Performs first line coaching, counseling, and discipline of direct reports. Schedules work hours of direct reports and models work assignments for staff.

Collaborates with the Pharmacy Manager for ongoing program development, budget, activities and functions, such as procurement and inventory control, data processing and distributive systems.

Provides pharmacists and other departmental personnel with formal and informal education experiences in assigned areas of expertise. Sees that department personnel have access to education and reference materials so as to remain current with pharmacy professionalism.

Participate in the training, education, precepting, and evaluation of pharmacy students and/or residents as assigned.

Collaborates with the Pharmacy Manager to assure efficient departmental operation by controlling and evaluating allocated financial resources, advancing various dispensing programs and improving productivity and quality. Assists with budget development.

Assures plans are executed for constant review/revision of the pharmacy information systems to meet the needs of the department, medical staff, patients and employees.

Collaborates with the Pharmacy Manager to plan, implement and maintain dispensing systems for the department. Coordinates all deliveries by internal and contract drivers to meet the needs of customers while controlling costs effectively.

Measures success by timely and quality reports, recommendations and projects profitability, inventory control as measured by the inventory turnover, budgetary compliance, the completion of assigned objectives, and compliance with appropriate licensing and regulatory standards.

Assures availability and training of adequate and properly organized staff so as to deliver the best possible pharmacy services to patients.

Stays abreast with developments in specialty area to ensure services provided are progressive and meet the needs of the patients.

Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating effectively in group decision making, working to accomplish team objectives and projects, and by soliciting feedback about one's effectiveness as a team member.

Continually improves processes by seeking ways to eliminate and reduce waste and improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
