Job Description:
This 32 hour per week, fully benefited manager position is responsible for planning, organizing and managing the overall operations and clinical services of the Pharmacy Department; ensures compliance with medication management quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from newborns to your adults.
Directs and controls the purchase and inventory management of pharmaceuticals, related items and supplies. Promotes/provides medication-related educational opportunities in an effort to advance the current pharmacy knowledge of patient care staff, patients and caregivers.
Participates in the department's clinical, operational, budgeting, educational and human resources activities. Collaborates with other department managers and medical and patient care leaders to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes and promote effective drug therapy.
Key Responsibilities:
Directs and participates in the development/implementation of departmental and hospital-wide guidelines, standards, policy and procedures in accordance with Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as well as laws and regulations enforced by MDH, MA Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA and EPA.
Ensures clinical pharmacists participate in drug therapy planning with physicians and Patient Care Service members on daily work rounds and through-out the day as appropriate.
Develops maintains and enforces policies/procedures that promote appropriate, safe and cost-effective medication use.
Ensures drug therapy orders are evaluated for appropriateness of drug, dose, route, frequency therapeutic duplication, real or potential allergies or sensitivities, real or potential interactions between the drugs ordered and other medications or food, current or potential impact as evidenced by laboratory values.
Tracks and trends Shriners - Medication Event Reporting Program (MERP); assists with identifying performance and process improvement initiatives related to MERP and presents data/plans to appropriate committees for assessment.
Monitors, maintains and recommends enhancements/advancements to Shriners Hospitals in-house electronic formulary and order entry program through collaboration with the patient care inter- disciplinary team.
Develops educational seminars for Patient Care Service/Medical Staff in an effort to enhance current knowledge; encourages/assists patient care team to become involved in furthering evidence-based medicine through research.
Provides up-to-date information on drug shortages, changes in formulary items, new medication-related policies/procedures.
Job Requirements
Doctorate of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy; current MA Pharmacy licensure; three (3) years plus management experience strongly preferred.
