Reports to: Pharmacy Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the pharmacists and the Pharmacy Manager. The Pharmacy Intern's primary job function is to assist the Pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications, inventory, and stock replacement. Assures the appropriate billing for SOMC patient and staff. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
Rounds with the pharmacist as needed.
Fills floor stock from stock requisitions/inventory reconciliation/and computer-generated pick lists.
Fill the inpatient carts by META generated fill list report for pharmacist check-off.
Prepares I.V. solutions, hyperalimentations, doses of medications for dispensing for pharmacist, and/or small volume parenterals using proper sterile techniques.
Profiles physician orders in computer system for pharmacist review.
Reconciles I.V.'s, and/or critical care drips on the floor and makes necessary adjustments on time and rate.
Has knowledge of all drugs used in Surgery (brand/generic names), strength of drugs, and charge mechanism for patient billing.
Ability to recognize narcotic discrepancies and perform audits as necessary.
Restocks anesthesia carts in OR suites in a timely and efficient manner.
Delivers medications to nursing units/hospital departments; Accomplishes hourly medication runs to nursing units/hospital departments.
Enters patient charges/credits into computer profile system.
Checks incoming orders of medications and pharmacy supplies against purchase requisitions for accuracy and completeness.
Reviews patient medication profile to identify medications available through Patient Assistance.
Contacts drug manufacturer for any application forms needed and/or enrolling patients for various programs over the phone/internet.
Obtains necessary income documentation from patients for various programs.
Completes applications and obtains prescriptions for each manufacturer's applications. May coordinate with physician regarding any substitutions and obtains signed applications/prescriptions.
Educates patient on his/her responsibility for re-ordering prescriptions.
Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous service to pharmacy window and telephone inquiries; takes messages when necessary or directs inquiry to the appropriate person.
Communicates with Purchasing Agent regarding stock levels and items needed to assure adequate inventory. Assures stock rotation and placement of items in appropriate storage areas.
Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.
