JOB POSTING: Pharmacy Intern - Inpatient Pharmacy

For students interested in pharmacy practice in the Inpatient setting. Must be available to work every other weekend through-out the school year.

We are seeking a Pharmacy Intern. This is an entry-level position. This position is responsible for aiding pharmacists in the processing, preparation, and dispensing of medication orders, IV products, TPNs, nursing supplies, and the delivery of these products to nursing units. The intern also assists with clinical tasks under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist by performing medication reconciliation for Emergency Department patients and other clinical duties as assigned. Pharmacy interns are required to work an average of 10-12 hours/week during the school year and 32 hours/week over the summer. The intern is expected to engage in professional development activities and meetings, as designated by the intern's assigned supervisor or manager.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Prepares unit-dose medications (both oral and IV), including reconstitution, when applicable.

  • Compounds TPNs and IV solutions.

  • Participates in training new employees.

  • Fills unit-dose medication cart for daily delivery.

  • Assists pharmacists in processing new medication orders and answering phones and triaging needs.

  • Delivers unit-dose medication carts.

  • Restocks work areas with supplies as needed.

  • Fills internal requisitions from customers.

  • Performs medication reconciliation in the Emergency Department.

  • Participates in quality improvement and research projects, as assigned.

  • Engages in clinical review of patients in collaboration/consultation with a pharmacist.

Qualifications

What Are We Looking For?

To fulfill this role successfully, you must possess these minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Current Ohio Pharmacy Intern license

  • Enrolled in accredited pharmacy school

  • Demonstrated skills in algebra by passing score on math competency administered on site.

Minimum Physical Requirements:

  • Lifts objects weighing up to 20kg

  • Pushing unit dose medication carts 15 kg

  • Talking on phone or in person

  • Typing on a computer keyboard

  • Standing/walking

  • Sitting Occasionally

What Will You Be Doing? * Ensure safe, timely and accurate transport of medications to their destination including response to pages and delivery of requested items. * Follow all isolation and radiation precaution signs. * Respond to emergency activities, such as Code Adam or disasters * Understand and apply knowledge of basic medication transport concepts, filling of automated dispensing cabinets, infection control practices, and proper body mechanics. * Demonstrates proper communication with related technology. To fulfill this role successfully, you must possess these minimum qualifications and experience: * High school diploma or equivalent * Demonstrated skills in algebra by passing score on math competency administered on site * Physical ability to withstand frequent to prolonged walking, standing, pushing and pulling, lifting and transferring medications. Work is physical in nature and requires stamina. * Certification as a pharmacy technician, with or without pharmacy experience, is preferred.
