Job Summary

Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assists in the various activities of the pharmacy department not requiring the professional judgment of a pharmacist. The Pharmacy Intern I is in training to ultimately become a licensed, practicing Pharmacist.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to transcribe orders onto medication profiles requiring the working knowledge of pharmaceutical medical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescribing, dispensing, and charting of medications. Learns to prepare a drug profile for newly admitted patients. • Handle, store and package drugs and other chemicals as appropriate to their chemical and physical properties, (i.e. light sensitive and refrigeration when necessary). • Learns to compound flammable, cytotoxic and sterile products using appropriate handling techniques and completes the necessary dispensing records. • Perform the calculations required for the usual dosage determinations and solution preparations, using weight and volume equivalents in both the metric and apothecary system.

    A final check on calculations is made by a pharmacist. • Learns to perform the basic functions of drug purchasing and inventory control including performance of the physical inventory reorder levels, check in drug shipments, retrieve drugs from storage areas, and return outdated drugs. • Learns to prepare medication orders for dispensing, utilizing appropriate drug dosages, routes of administration, and dosage forms. Picks all doses for all patient unit dose cassettes and completes the necessary dispensing records. • Learns to repackage and label unit doses from a bulk supply of drugs and correctly completes necessary manufacturing quality control records with the final check by a pharmacist. • Learns to prepare sterile parenteral products utilizing appropriate aseptic procedures and techniques relating to parenteral admixture preparation, including a basic knowledge of drug-drug incompatibilities. • Learns to apply the special dispensing and record keeping procedures that apply to the dispensing of: Controlled substances Investigational drugs Non-formulary drugs • Learns to prepare medication orders for dispensing in the ambulatory care area including order entry into the Renlar computer system, specialized procedures for dispensing the documentation in the ambulatory care area, and cash register transactions. • Understand the general requirements of any local, state or federal laws that specifically affect the Pharmacy Intern's responsibilities and understands the ethics of the pharmacy profession including the confidential nature of all work carried out in the pharmacy department. • Utilize correct telephone communication techniques and protocol.

    Both in receiving and in initiating calls and understands when to triage a question that requires a pharmacist's judgment. • Learns to complete monthly nursing unit inspections with the staff pharmacists for all medications in any nursing unit or ancillary department in the hospital. Provides delivery and pick up of medications and medication orders for any nursing unit in the hospital. • Learns to gather and verify patient data (age, weight, allergies, diagnosis) that is necessary for the medication administration record or the pharmacy medication profile. • Learns to perform appropriate computer date entry for automated areas in the pharmacy including ambulatory care patient prescription profiles, narcotic dispensing, intravenous admixture operations, and the manufacturing/prepackaging equipment. • Maintains the department in a clean, neat and orderly manner.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Patient Group Knowledge (Only applies to positions with direct patient contact) The employee must possess/obtain (by the end of the orientation period) and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide developmentally appropriate assessment, treatment or care as defined by the department's identified patient ages. Specifically the employee must be able to demonstrate competency in: 1) ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs; 2) knowledge of growth and development; and 3) understanding of the range of treatment needed by the patients.

Competency Statement Must demonstrate competency through an initial orientation and ongoing competency validation to independently perform tasks and additional duties as specified in the job description and the unit/department specific competency checklist. Perform work in accordance with all departmental pay practices and scheduling policies, including but not limited to, overtime, various shift work, and on-call situations. 7. Perform work in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan of the organization. 8.

Follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures, as applicable. 9. Perform related duties as assigned.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED (Required) Education: Must be currently enrolled in a Pharmacy program. Experience: 6-12 months training/experience at CAMC as a Pharmacy Intern 1 or completion of Summer Pharmacy Intern Training Program 1.
