Our client is in search of a high-performing and successful Pharmacy Clinical Manager for a community hospital with 147 beds. The Pharmacy Clinical Manager will be responsible for providing leadership to pharmacy team members and will assist with managing in the absence of the Pharmacy Director.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Responsible for designing, implementing and managing the pharmacy clinical programs. This includes overseeing the preparation for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, formulary management, policy and procedure development and education across the healthcare spectrum
  • Interpret orders and transcribes or verifies them accurately and efficiently into the pharmacy computer system
  • Accurately compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals
  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergies and appropriateness of drug and dose
  • Provide clinical consultation and clarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effective therapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed.
  • Sustain the hospital formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promotes rational drug therapy selection


  • Bachelors degree or Pharm D. from an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy required
  • Pharmacist applicants must be licensed in the state of Virginia or able to obtain licensure within 30 days of hire
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hospital pharmacy
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in management preferred OR equivalent combination of education and/or experience accepted in lieu of management experience

Full-time No Weekends Responsibilities The Pharmacy ClinicalManager is responsible for designing, implementing and managing the pharmacyclinical programs. The Pharmacy Clinical Managerserves in a supervisory capacity within the pharmacy department; therefore,will assist with managing the pharmacy when the Pharmacy Director isunavailable. * Interpret orders and transcribes or verifies them accurately and efficientlyinto the pharmacy computer system * Accurately compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals * Monitor drug therapy regimens forcontraindications, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergiesand appropriateness of drug and dose * Provide clinical consultation andclarification to practitioners. Suggests appropriate, cost-effectivetherapeutic alternatives to medical staff as needed. * Sustain the hospital formulary, minimizingnon-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic interchanges and promotesrational drug therapy selection * Support participation in daily multidisciplinaryand bedside rounds (may need to attend) * Identify, design and analyze drugutilization reviews to promote rational drug therapy and determines action planbased on results * Provide accurate and timely medicationinformation to healthcare staff and patients * Develop, manage and mentor pharmacy clinical programs such asdrug consults, nutrition support, pharmacokinetics, anticoagulant monitoring,pain management, IV to PO, renal dosing and other programs as determinedappropriate based on patient population and literature guidelines. * Develop, manage and mentor antimicrobialmanagement program (AMP). * Document all clinical activities andinterventions accurately and completely. Responsible for mentoring andeducation as well as ongoing analysis of interventions to insure accurate andappropriate documentation and provides summary reports * Support and participate in the goals of theorganization's quality improvement, risk management and patient safety programto include but not limited to National Patient Safety Goals, Core Measures andHCAHPS medication related initiatives. * Responsible for design, analysis andreporting of adverse drug reactions, medication errors and pharmacy qualityinitiatives. Mentors others in their roles for these programs * Develop and actively participate in trainingand mentorship programs for pharmacists, pharmacy students, residents,technicians, nurses and physicians. Responsible for assessment of participantsin these programs. Provides a minimum of two (2) inservices per year onrational medication therapy, disease management, and pharmaceutical careeffectively to health care professionals. * Develop and document staff competency on anongoing basis and develops improvement plans when deficiencies in competenciesare identified which includes the review of the performance and documentationof clinical activities of all pharmacists including documentation of thefinancial impact of clinical activities. * Primary preceptor for pharmacy studentsand/or residents as it relates to clinical pharmacy services. Responsible fordesigning and managing program and mentoring student/resident as well as otherpreceptors * Maintain professional competency sufficientto meet current and future needs of the facility which includes reviewing andevaluating medical literature for studies supporting the pharmaceutical careand pharmacoeconomic programs. * Develop and manage specialty pharmacypractice programs as related to clinical pharmacy services * Effectively and proactively intervene inconflicts between pharmacy and medical staff regarding drug therapy issueresolutions. * Maintain appropriate controlled substancerecords. * Comply with all regulatory standards. Workwith the pharmacy director to identify and develop processes to meet or exceedall regulatory standards. Participate in quality and regulatory reviews and audits * Prioritize work and leads others to complywith facility medication turn-around time policy and procedure. Identify areasfor improved efficiency * Supervise and assist pharmacy techniciansand other support staff effectively * Work with the director to establish pharmacygoals and objectives and responsible for implementation and monitoring * Participate with various nursing and medicalstaff committees as necessary * Participate with various hospital committeeswhich may include the disaster team, code team, etc. * Responsible in conjunction with director ofpharmacy for staff performance evaluations * Act as manager in charge as assigned * Responsible for development and review ofphysician order sets and other evidenced based medication use guidelines * Responsible for routine publication of thepharmacy newsletter and/or other forms of written and electronic communication * Responsible for drug class reviews and drugmonographs * Responsible for managing and monitoring thedrug formulary * Responsible for the development,implementation, and monitoring of pharmacy clinical initiatives * Responsible for the development and reviewof pharmacy policies and procedures as appropriate for clinical services * Practice and adhere to the " Code ofConduct" philosophy and "Mission and Value Statement" * Collaborates with laboratory in thedevelopment of an antibiogram annually. * Participates in community educationalprograms (e.g. , diabetes classes, health fairs).
