MAIN FUNCTION:

The Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing all clinical pharmacy activities, programs, and services. The Pharmacy Clinical Coordinator provides operational support to the Director, Pharmacy Services, oversees staff supervision, and implements and coordinates procedures and systems to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of the department in collaboration with the Director. The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for residents and faculty with privileges to practice pharmacy at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop, implement, manage, and evaluate all clinical pharmacy programs.

  • Contribute to the planning and achievement of objectives in regard to the development and sustainability of clinical pharmacy services within the department and the institution in an effort to optimize the evidence based therapeutic use of medications in a cost-effective manner.

  • Provide specialized pharmaceutical services and education including advising physicians on matters pertaining to drug utilization and pharmacotherapy.

  • Oversee Clinical Staff Pharmacists as they provide specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including, but not limited to, advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and their side effects, as well as assisting in the prescription of appropriate doses.

  • Develop, evaluate, report and otherwise participate in Continuous Quality Improvement, Drug Utilization Evaluation, Adverse Drug Reaction reporting, Medication Use, and other projects as assigned.

  • Actively participate as a member in hospital committees relating to medication management and clinical practice; may serve as chair in one or more committees (examples include Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Medication Safety).

  • Assist in development of order sets, including evidence-based order sets.

  • Update and maintain clinical decision support database.

  • Provide expert opinion and guidance on system change and enhancement requests.

  • Aid in design and deployment of clinical decision support.

  • May serve as Residency Director.

  • Maintain liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff; provide timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage and compatibility, state and federal regulations regarding drug controls, and Joint Commission Standards.

  • Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control and environmental standards.

  • Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.

  • Meet annual competency and retraining requirements. Ensure staff meets annual competency and retraining requirements.

  • Attend meetings as required.

  • Perform other functions/duties as requested.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy from a college or university accredited by the American Association of College of Pharmacy (AACP) required; Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or university accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) preferred

  • Licensure by the Massachusetts State Board of Pharmacy or eligibility for licensure required

  • Completion of an ASHP accredited pharmacy practice residency program or equivalent clinical experience required

  • Two (2) to three (3) years of clinical pharmacy experience and/or two (2) to three (3) years of Clinical Coordinator experience preferred; Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) preferred

  • Demonstrated excellent clinical, interpersonal, leadership, organizational, oral and written communication skills required

  • Management or supervisory experience preferred
