Position Summary
The Pharmacy Benefits Specialist coordinates all processes related to pharmaceuticals for our patients, including patient refill requests, prior authorizations, and relationships with pharmaceutical representatives.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
Processes patient and pharmacy requests for medication refills .
Initiates, completes, and follows up on prior authorizations for medications.
Assists patients with Patient Assistance Application completion and tracks applications.
Manages relationships with pharmaceutical representatives; conducts meetings in person and over video calls and requests/manages on-site pharmaceutical samples.
Works with retail and specialty pharmacies to ensure timely resolution of medication processing issues.
Enters prescriptions under the order of the provider when necessary.
Contacts patients for additional information or updates regarding prior authorizations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
High School diploma or equivalent required.
Successful completion of a pharmacy technician program is highly preferred.
Licensure/Certification
Certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board is preferred.
Experience
Minimum of one year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician is highly preferred.
In absence of Pharmacy Technician experience, a minimum of one year of relevant experience requiring pharmaceutical knowledge in a healthcare setting is required.
Competencies Required
Knowledge
Working knowledge of medical terminology.
Advanced understanding of pharmacology.
Skills
Possesses interpersonal, communication, and listening skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with patients, physicians, and all staff members.
Proficient computer skills working in an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management software.
Demonstrates professionalism and respect in all forms of communication and correspondence.
Abilities
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of health information.
Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment and cope with rapidly changing patient care needs.
Ability to prepare, gather and document completely, efficiently and accurately in an electronic medical record.
