General Statement

The Pharmacist, under general supervision, dispenses pharmaceutical drugs, medicines and prescriptions, and provides direct consultative services to health care professionals and patients regarding drug therapy. Serves as pharmacy manager for the Division of Public Health.

Essential Functions

Provides gestational diabetes education by evaluating blood sugar logs and counseling on meal plan and exercise. Instructs patients on how to prepare and inject insulin preparations.

Consults and makes recommendations on drug therapy for Child Health, Family Planning, Maternal Health, STD, TB Clinics, Triage and Union County Jail.

Counsels patients on use of medication including medical devices such as nebulizers and spacers.

Provides in-service education for staff, including the PHN dispensing course and the naloxone dispensing program.

Monitors therapy for drug choice, dosage, drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, and formulary adherence.

Reports adverse drug events to manufacturers.

Dispenses pharmaceuticals to patients of public health clinics.

Manage operations of the pharmacy including ordering and maintaining inventory. Assumes lead role of the 340B program.

Ensures pharmacy laws and regulations are followed.

Maintains current DEA and NC Board of Pharmacy registration for the Health Department and Union County Jail.

Assists with the implementation of identified pharmacy initiatives.

Assists in policy, procedures and protocol writing.

Assists patients with prescription savings, including manufacturer rebates and patient assistance programs. Assists in linking community members to low cost medication programs.

Maintains NC Medicaid Preferred Drug List and compiles short list for Child Health Providers.

Provides community education.

In unique situations, counsels inmates at Union County jail on various disease states with pharmacological and non-pharmacological recommendations.

Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.

Establishes an Emergency Preparedness role in planning for medication distribution and patient care during disasters.

Serves as pharmacist liaison between UC Inmate Health and pharmaceutical vendor. Participates in formulary selection for UC Inmate Health.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Requires a Doctor of pharmacy Degree from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school, and two (2) years of experience as a pharmacist including one (1) year in a supervisory position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

NC Board of Pharmacy License to practice pharmacy.

Yearly continuing education credits as required to maintain licensure.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Doctor of pharmacy Degree from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school, and two (2) years of experience as a pharmacist in a Public Health agency including one (1) year in a supervisory position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Immunization certification

NC Board of Pharmacy License to practice pharmacy.

Yearly continuing education credits as required to maintain licensure.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.

This role will accurately and courteously express pharmacy policies and procedures to the customers when appropriate.Primary Responsibilities & Accountabilities * Assist in the preparation of prescriptions including entering patient information (demographics, drug allergies and pharmaceutical history) and prescription orders into the computer for processing. * Assist pharmacist in filling prescriptions by pulling stock, pouring, counting, restocking, packaging, labeling and pricing the prescription. * Provide first class customer service by greeting customers as they enter the pharmacy, keeping the pharmacy clean and inviting and answering the phone in a courteous manner. * Assist pharmacist in the preparation, reconciliation and billing of third party insurance claims and in the re-billing of rejected third party claims. * Assist in checking and removing out-of-date product as instructed by the pharmacist. * Order, receive, rotate and store product to assure quality controls. * Reconcile daily merchandise orders. * Maintain confidentiality in compliance of federal HIPPA regulations. * Organize and file records. * Maintain all product labels, signs and prices aligned with product. * Keep work area clean, orderly and free from safety hazards; report hazards to store management. * Perform price checks for customers and associates, as needed. * Operate the cashier terminal, credit card machine and electronic signature capture device when checking out customers; collect proper payment for merchandise. * Perform other job-related duties as assigned. QualificationsMinimum * Must be 18 years of age. * Certified Pharmacy Technician: Successfully complete the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. * Pharmacy Technician (Non-Certified): no certification required. * Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently. * Ability to understand and follow English instructions. * Authorization to work in the United States or the ability to obtain the same. * Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and background check. Preferred * Possess good telephone skills and complete cashier training. * Ability to understand and operate the computer in the pharmacy. * Possess and exercise good attention to detail and accuracy.
