Permit Technician / Code Inspector Trainee

SAFEbuilt is currently looking for a Permit Technician/Code Inspector Trainee with experience in construction or municipal services to work with our building department operational team. This position serves as key office personnel who interact daily with the public, city employees, inspectors, plans examiners and the building official.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interfacing with all customers to service their building department related needs.

  • Issuing and/or tracking permits through the permitting process, beginning with application acceptance, plan review, inspections and permit closure.

  • Establishing and maintaining systems to ensure that all files, letters, reference manuals, field inspection reports, permit files, blueprints, drawings, and other data or material is maintained in an organized fashion.

  • Working with plans examiners and inspectors throughout the company to develop and ensure consistent processes.

  • Assisting with public record requests and record conversion.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Possess the ability to positively interact with the other staff members, the general public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele.

  • Good time management, organization, telephone, attention to detail, and people skills.

  • Must be able to perform multi-task operations with frequent interruptions.

  • Perform a variety of duties requiring use of critical thinking, independent judgment, and technical knowledge.

  • Self-motivated and takes initiative.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office Skills are a must.

  • Permitting Software experience is a plus.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in fast paced, customer service focused, office environment

  • Construction or Municipal experience required

  • 2+ years municipal experience preferred

  • ICC Permit Technician certification is a bonus

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Investigate and enforce municipal, land development and property maintenance codes within city boundaries. * Responds to and investigates allegations of violations of Municipal, Land Development and Property Maintenance Codes to determine validity of complaints and the appropriate course of action to mitigate issues. * Notification of issues given in writing, by phone, in person and electronically. * Schedules and performs systematic property maintenance inspections to maintain or achieve minimum property standards. * Attends neighborhood meetings to discuss and educate citizens about City codes. * Prepares records and reports pertaining to abatements, court actions, daily activities, enforcement actions and inspections. * Compiles documentation for and issues summons. * Testifies in municipal court as required. * Performs other duties as required or assigned. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: * High School Diploma or GED * Valid driver's license and good driving record * 1 year or more experience in enforcement, compliance-related work including investigating allegations, conducting research and resolving complaints, concerns or conflicts * Knowledge of general construction practices, procedures and requirements * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens and elected officials; Handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy * Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to make presentations * Ability to read, interpret, and explain City codes and site plans, maps and work plans PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS: * GACE Certification * ICC Zoning Inspector Certification preferred * ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector Certification preferred COMPENSATION: SAFEbuilt pays competitive wages and has a strong benefit offering including company vehicle.
