Under the direct supervision of the OR Business Operations Specialist, the SDSU Patient Navigator performs a variety of duties associated with the management and the orderly flow of visitors and patients in the surgical reception room. He or she will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by his or her supervisor.
Performs secretarial/clerical functions within the SDSU reception room.
Prepares, compiles, and maintains patient records according to established procedures.
Prepares and distributes schedules, maintains log, organizes all records and forms, and completes patient charges in designated time frames.
Acts as a backup to the surgical schedulers and schedules procedures accurately and according to approved guidelines.
Compiles and distributes Press Ganey patient satisfaction reports
Manages Press Ganey patient satisfaction activities as related to the OR / SDSU
Functions as a Navigator
Welcomes and greets all patients and visitors, in person or over the phone
Answers the phone while maintaining a polite, consistent phone manner using proper telephone etiquette and by identifying patient and self.
Responsible for keeping the reception area clean and organized
Admits patients upon their arrival and assigns a bed
Facilitates patient flow by notifying the SDSU nurses of patients' arrival, awareness of procedural delays, and also communicating with patients and clinical staff
Responds to inquiries by patients, prospective patients, and visitors in a friendly and courteous manner
Keeps medical office supplies adequately stocked by anticipating inventory needs, placing orders, and monitoring office equipment
Protects patient confidentiality, making sure protected health information is secured by not leaving PHI in plain sight and logging off the computer before leaving it unattended.
Escorts patients to the pre-op area
Tracks waiting times of patients in the area
Displays a friendly and cheerful manner when greeting patients, visitors, physicians, and other persons presenting to the department
Willingly provides assistance and emotional support as necessary.
Accurately and promptly relays pertinent information to the appropriate team members or to the patient or family.
Updates family members on surgical patient status
Communicates and coordinates activities with other hospital departments and vendors
Provides direction to volunteers/vendors when present.
Willingly performs other duties as requested, e.g., running errands, copying materials, and retrieving information
Demonstrates ability to obtain information and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs relative to the patient's age and/or developmental level
Adheres to safety practices, reports accidents/hazards and maintains equipment as outlined in hospital policies
Maintains and orderly and friendly environment to assist patients and family members in the reception room during business hours
