The Perioperative Fellowship is a 6 - 9 month specialty training program that Main Line Health offers to train experienced Acute Care Nurses to become Operating Room Nurses. This program is facilitated by MLH Operating Room Clinical Nurse Educators and is supported by unit preceptors, coordinators, and managers. Acceptance into the program requires a full-time transfer to one of the Main Line Health Operating Rooms:

Clinical Expectations:

As a Registered Nurse in the Perioperative Fellowship Program, you will learn both the circulating and scrub role as you rotate through specialties including: General Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Neurology, Plastics, Vascular, Bariatric, Trauma, Robotics, etc. Each week, you will build on basic skills as you follow didactic modules to match your weekly goals. Nurses will also attend in-services and staff meetings. At the end of the course, all participants must sit for the Periop 101 exam. (You may be required to purchase some educational materials, such as a textbook.)

For the first time, we are also offering a Fellowship position at Lankenau on the Cardiac/Open Heart Team. This will be an extended orientation in conjunction with the General OR Fellowship Training.

Fellowship Schedule:

Fulltime, Monday Friday

Unit Training from 7:00am 3:30pm & Occasional Classroom Time 11:00am 7:00pm

Off-shift rotations occur later in orientation to experience different shifts as well as Buddy-call

Once the Program is over, schedule is TBD, based on unit needs.

Qualifications:

Internal Main Line Health Employees: To be considered for the program, at time of application, candidates must have at least one year of recent acute care nursing experience and be employed at Main Line Health for at least fifteen months, per our internal transfer policy.

External Candidates: To be considered for the program, at time of application, candidates must have at least one year of recent acute care nursing experience.

Applicants must have a strong desire to work in the Operating Room; be able to receive constructive feedback; commit to the orientation schedule; handle various smells and sights; and have a sense of humor!

March 25th April 12th: Shadowing

You will be notified if you are selected to move forward with the interview process. It is required that you attend a scheduled OR Shadow Day at one of our MLH Campuses.

April 15th April 26th: Panel interviews will be scheduled.

June 3rd: Fellowship starts!

VIEW JOBS 7/16/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-10-14T00:00 The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) offers a one year full time fellowship in Perioperative Quality and Safety starting July 1, 2019. Up to three positions are available annually. The principles and practice of patient quality and safety, particularly as applied to the complex perioperative environment, are the focus of this program. The Periop Safety Fellows (program started 2016) are an integral part of the perioperative quality and safety group at HUP. They are involved in the hands-on investigation, analysis, and process improvement plan for all significant patient quality and safety issues in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative (PACU) areas. HUP perioperative services encompasses 40 operating rooms (inpatient and outpatient) and 10 endoscopy rooms, performing over 60,000 procedures annually. Graded supervision is provided by dedicated on site faculty and staff from surgery, anesthesia and nursing with special experience and knowledge in safety, quality, and perioperative patient care. The structured curriculum, developed and taught by Penn faculty, includes readings, seminars, training, and projects designed to educate fellows regarding (inter alia): clinical errors and human factors engineering, root cause analysis, process improvement, measurement of clinical quality, six sigma, team training, in-situ simulation and change management. Fellows are also intimately involved in other important aspects of perioperative management including supply chain, scheduling, personnel, materials management and clinical engineering.
