Job Summary:

In conjunction with the Director, Perioperative Education, plans, implements and evaluates departmental orientation and education activities for clinical and support staff.


  • In conjunction with unit managers and education staff, plans and implements orientation for new hires.

  • Assists education staff in assigning unit preceptors.

  • May assist in interview process for new staff.

  • Completes probationary performance evaluations for new hires and participates in annual evaluations with unit Managers.

  • Coordinates continuing education and training programs and staff development within the department.

  • Assists Manager, Professional Development with coordination of programs with areas colleges and universities.

  • Performs patient care up to 20% of work time in area of clinical expertise in order to demonstrate clinical competence and be able to teach others.

  • Actively assists management team with ensuring staff compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • This may include, but is not limited to, training and recertification for CPR, ACLS, annual education on fire safety, diversity, code management, HIPPAA and coordination of TB testing.

  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.

  • Master's Degree preferred.


  • Current State license as a Registered Nurse (RN).

  • Certification in perioperative nursing such as Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR), Certified Post Anesthesia Nurse (CPAN), etc. preferred.

Complexity of Work:

  • Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment.

Work Experience:

  • Two years of perioperative experience required.

  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical specialty; with current patient care competence.

  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, motivational strategies, change theory, group process skills, leadership and teaching strategies.

  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated computer skills utilizing clinical systems (Epic/Optime) and Microsoft applications (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions of working irregular hours.

  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

VIEW JOBS 11/4/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-02T00:00 Position Objective Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction, develop, organize, and implement engaging cancer education and research presentations for middle school students, high school students and high school teachers. As part of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center's outreach efforts, targeted at increasing underrepresented minorities as cancer center patients and professionals, we have initiated a number of high school, undergraduate and high school teacher pipeline programs. These programs provide high school and undergraduate students with positions specifically designated for underrepresented minorities, with exposure to careers in medical research for summer immersion program working in faculty research laboratories. In addition, trainees are exposed to a series of faculty delivered seminars, which include scientific material, as well as, career development and the relation of personal experiences. The program culminates in a poster presentation symposium where all the students present their research projects to the mentors, family, friends, other faculty, program staff and community members. In addition to the research immersion, targeted at high school and undergraduate students, the program, funded by the NCI, conducts cancer and research education and engagement programs for middle school students and their families throughout the year, leading to their recruitment into the high school research immersion program. The program also engages high school science teachers to participate in the summer immersion program and throughout the year in research immersion and curriculum development programs. Essential Functions 1. Develop, organize, and implement engaging cancer education and research presentations for middle school students, high school students and high school teachers. (10%) 2. Coordinate delivery of programs at regional schools and school visits to cancer center and ability to recruit, schedule and implement programs. (10%) 3. Interact with computer design and virtual reality specialist to develop engaging educational programs. (5%) 4. Interact with medical students, graduate students and faculty to develop and present programs. (5%) 5. Coordinate high school teacher programs in cancer curriculum development. (5%) 6. Schedule and implement programs during the school year following research immersion activities. (10%) 7. Develop and maintain website and newsletter. (10%) 8. Interact with evaluators to develop, administer and analyze program evaluation material. (5%) 9. Prepare stewardship reports and proposals for additional funding. (10%) 10. Assist with students, teachers, faculty recruitment, paperwork and stipends. (10%) 11. Oversee applications and participation of high school students in national cancer focused program targeted at high school students. (10%) NonEssential Functions 12. Maintain contact and track progress of program participants through college, graduate school and career placement. (5%) 13. Organize and guide tours of CCC Shared Resources for regional high school students and their families to interest and engage student participation in research program. (5%) 14.
