Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Perinatal Sonographer III utilizes high frequency sound waves along with color and spectral Doppler ultrasound to assist in the monitoring and growth during pregnancy, and assists in ultrasound guided fetal procedures. The Sonographers within KU's OB/GYN MFM Department are leading the region with their practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures as prescribed by a physician including positions patients for the proper view of the affected area; selects the appropriate scan images to be recorded; obtains essential information from patients, medical records, and previous scans for clinical correlation.

  • Instructs patients about the proper physiological requirements for the procedure; helps patient transfer to exam table and ensures adequate patient immobilization to perform the scan; knows how to change scanning parameters to improve a scan.

  • Obtains diagnostic sonographic images by scanning the appropriate body part of the patient with the transducer; provides documentation of ultrasound exam sufficient for physicians to interpret.

  • Assists physicians with ultrasound guided procedures in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. May participate in student and physician education.

  • Maintains work area to include medical supplies for procedures.

  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department. Competencies

Sonographer expectations and experience to obtain Level III

  • Competency checklist for:

  • Core abnormal maternal AND fetal anatomy recognition through image/chart audits. (Including pattern recognition by trimester)

  • Observation and initial training on PUBS, shunts, and any inpatient procedures requiring perinatal sonography services.

  • Minimum 4 annually (at least 2 clinically)

After a minimum of 18-24 months of active level III perinatal experience within this health system, sonographers can apply for compensation adjustment if they meet the following (eligibility to be determined by Supervisor/Manager/Clinical Director):

  • Annual oral presentation given to Supervisor and MFM Clinical Director on the following:

  • Abnormal scans AND additional imaging needed to complete the sonographic evaluation

  • Proficiency in preparing for and guiding all inpatient procedures that require perinatal sonography services (Including but not limited to PUBS, shunts, transfusions) to include completion of competency checklist.

  • Must complete a minimum of 4 annually (clinically or simulation)

  • Case study presentation (create and collaborate with faculty, fellows, and genetic counselors) minimum 1 annually during monthly sonography education sessions

  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • High School Education

  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program which meets requirements by the --American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S)

  • Active OB/GYN RDMS certification or RDMS credential must be earned within 90 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support certification

  • All requirements of level II and:

  • Minimum of 36 months active Perinatal Sonography experience with ability to recognize common birth defects as determined by the Supervisor or Lead sonographer, and MFM Ultrasound Unit Leader

  • Active participant in self-directed on-going continuing education and as QI peer reviewer of ultrasounds performed within the health system as directed by the Supervisor/Lead Sonographer

  • Ability to train in areas of competency for OBGYN including procedures of Amniocentesis, and Chorionic Sampling (CVS)

  • Fetal Echocardiography Board Certification • Serve as a preceptor for new hires (All new hires who meet the level III JD requirements must complete competency checklist for level I, II and the Lippincott module for sterile field within 60 days (about 2 months) of hire)

  • Read and Write English

  • Driving, Computer Skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Experience in an Academic setting

  • Credentialed RDMS in Abdomen Specialty Exam

  • Credentialed RVT in Vascular
