Summary

Reports to Director of Perfusion or his/her designee. Ensures that the Perfusion Department meets quality standards and promptly responds to open heart surgery, auto-transfusion, pump standby, and PRP according to protocol and hospital policies/procedures relating to operation and monitoring of cell saver equipment before, during or after surgery.

Performs Peri-Operative Blood Management Job Responsibilities by:

  • Responsible for charting and assisting Perfusionist during open heart surgery.

  • Responsible for cell saving during vascular, orthopedic, open heart and trauma surgery cases.

  • Responsible for assisting in the inventory and stocking of all supplies and equipment, which may include IABPS, IABP catheters, transducers, etc. in CCU, ICU, Cath Lab and Operating Room.

  • May be responsible for Plasma Rich Platelet (PRP) during vascular, orthopedic or PRP cases.

  • Responsible for assisting in the cleaning of all equipment and maintaining appropriate documentation.

  • Responsible for ancillary duties that may include, but not limited to: typing reports, copying, returning calls and obtaining pertinent patient information (pre and post operatively).

  • Responsible for assisting with the daily/weekly controls for the HMS system and maintaining documentation.

  • Responsible for "on-call" coverage for cell savers and/or back up assistance for emergency open heart surgery with response time as acceptable.

  • Requires the ability to strictly follow Memorial Hospital of South Bend's (MHSB) policy on confidentiality.

  • Requires the ability to utilize good judgment and maintain composure in stressful situations.

  • Responds and exercises safe judgment and decision making in both elective and emergent situations.

  • Has knowledge and demonstrates universal precautions.

  • Provides for safe patient environment based on policy and procedures.

  • Performs all duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.

  • Completes other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.

  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

  • Complies with established organization and department policies.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of at least 1 year of college education; college degree or a minimum of 1 year work experience in a medical field. Must maintain BLS certification. Associate must pass the Peri-Operative Blood Management Technologist certification within 1 year of employment and keep certification current on an on-going basis.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Responsible for completion of patient billing and quality care database at the completion of each case in an acceptable manner.

  • Ability to ready analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedures and legal documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of the organization.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format. Requires initiative, judgment and dependability in completing work assignments. Displays well-developed organizational skills, priority setting and problem-solving techniques.

  • This position requires computer and systems competency in the following areas: enters data; retrieves data; uses and analyzes data.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to deal with moderate to high levels of stress due to demands of the surgical team and the critical nature of many procedures.

  • May work long hours without break when on call or in other emergency situations.

  • May be frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemical, risk of electric shock, infectious diseases, biohazards and blood borne pathogens. May also be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; extreme cold; extreme heat; and risk of exposure to radiation.

  • When on-call must report to hospital within 30 minutes of being called-in.

Physical Demands

  • Able to stand for long periods of time, sometimes in awkward positions due to length and nature of surgical procedures.
