Under direction of a Clinical Coordinator, to provide direct or indirect nursing care to hospital patients in a general or specialized nursing unit; and to perform related work as required.

The Per Diem Nurse is distinguished from the Registered Nurse classification in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs. This position is for night shift only. There is one (1) vacancy at Ventura County Medical Center and one(1) vacancy at Santa Paula Hospital.

BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department.  To qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE:  Some positions may be eligible for educational incentive pay in addition to the adjusted base rate of pay in the noted amounts for educational attainments which are not specifically required for the classification:

  • Bachelor's Degree $1.25/hr

  • Graduate's Degree $1.75/hr

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT:  Health Care Agency - Ventura County Medical Center/Santa Paula Hospital

Per Diem Registered Nurse III are represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

NOTE:  Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA Per Diem Unit memorandum of agreement.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for these positions only. There are currently two (2) Per Diem (Intermittent) vacancies (one vacancy at VCMC and one vacancy at SPH) for the night shift only.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: 7/9/2024

CLOSING DATE: Continuous (Previously 7/24/2024)Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing nursing process, plans and participates in providing daily patient care;

  • Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications;

  • Makes patient observations, records and reports all pertinent information; provides follow-through on judgement;

  • Assists doctors in examination and treatment;

  • Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift;

  • Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of ancillary personnel and in the training of new personnel;

  • Performs other related duties as required.

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Per Diem Registered Nurse III - requires at least five (5) years of professional nursing experience. These employees may be appointed to work on specialized short term projects such as hospital accreditation or on other projects that require specialized administrative duties and responsibilities.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing

  • Must be willing and able to work night shifts

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California, or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.

  • Successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment is mandatory.

  • Must possess a valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certificate PRIOR to the first day of employment.

  • Must possess a current, valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

  • Must possess a current, valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

  • Must possess a current, valid Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within six (6) months of hire. (VCMC only)

DESIRED

  • Ventura County MICN certification preferred. (VCMC only)
  • These competency requirements are in conformance with the California Board of Registered Nurses nursing requirements.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of: the theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; knowledge of medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; medicines and narcotics.
