STATUS: REGULAR/FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT

RATE OF PAY: $22.00 - $26.00 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:

The Peer Support Counselor will interact with the Behavioral Health and Prevention team to assist individuals with mental, emotional, or substance abuse problems. Additionally, the Peer Support Counselor will be available in the community to provide support to individuals who are in counseling services, or in need. The Peer Support Counselor will help develop a support plan with the clients and assist them in meeting their goals towards recovery and independent living.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Serve as a role model demonstrating resiliency in overcoming obstacles and managing their own recovery common to those with serious mental illness and be willing to share personal lived experience as appropriate. Assist consumers with identifying goals that promote recovery and resiliency and assist practitioners with identifying services and activities to help consumers reach those goals.

  • Transport consumers to/from appointments, treatment, and other related services as needed to assist consumers in stabilizing their life.

  • Assist consumers with voicing interests and goals through appropriate channels and assisting them with their transition from inpatient to outpatient settings.

  • Build positive supportive relationships with consumers that help promote hope, choice, wellness and recovery. Provide one-to-one support during and after hospitalization. Lead and/or co-lead self-help support and education groups.

  • Assist consumers with identifying and linking to community-based services and supports (primary care, mental health and/or substance abuse treatment, housing and employment resources, consumer support and self-help groups, etc.) Aid with applying for and securing financial benefits.

  • Assist consumers to understand the effects of psychiatric medications, and with filling prescriptions after discharge.

  • Work in conjunction with all inpatient and outpatient programs as part of the consumer's treatment team.

  • Coordinate with inpatient treatment units to facilitate discharge planning and develop and implement individualized transition plans with each participant.

  • Assist consumers in their recovery by teaching independent living skills such as shopping, budgeting, meal preparation, accessing public transportation (including accompanying consumers to appointments) and establishing/maintaining community based natural supports.

  • Attend relevant meetings. Provide coverage for other Peer Support Specialists.

  • Maintain clinical and billing records, submit daily activity reports, and chart consumer contact in the electronic medical record as needed.

  • Establish and maintain record keeping/filing systems in support of individualized one-to-one services. Operate office equipment such as computers, calculators, and copy/fax machines. Order, receive and maintain inventory of materials and supplies for various consumer support services.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS& ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Lived experience related to mental health, substance use, or both.

  • Lived experience may be as a family member of someone who is/has been struggling with the same.

Applicants considered for this position will be required to disclose if they are the subject of any substantiated findings or current investigations related to sexual misconduct at their current employment and past employment. Disclosure is required under Washington state law.

MNIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record

  • Must obtain within 6 months of hire a Peer Counselor Certification (Department of Behavioral Health and Recovery) OR Community Health Worker Certification (Department of Health).

  • Agency Affiliated Counselor Registration/License (must apply within 7 days of hire and obtain the credential within 60 days of hire.
