Main Purpose of Job

A Peer Recovery Specialist I, Certified is the entry level of work, in the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) providing peer support and advocacy to individuals with substance use disorders, mental health disorders or co-occurring disorders. This peer support position provides case management services to help identify intervention and treatment services available in the community, in order to initiate and maintain recovery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1.Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current certification as a Peer Recovery Specialist within 24 months from date of hire from the Maryland Addictions Professional Certification Board (MAPCB) located at 10807 Falls Rd., #1376, Brooklandville, MD 21022. A copy of your certificate must be attached to the application.
2.Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1.Employees in this classification who fail to obtain the required certification by the end of 24 months of continuous employment with the hiring department shall be subject to disciplinary action including demotion, suspension and dismissal.
2.Applicants for this classification must be in a state of recovery for 2 years from a substance use, mental health or co-occurring disorder before they can be qualified to be hired as a Peer Recovery Specialist, Certified.
3.Employees in this classification must complete any additional training that is deemed necessary and appropriate maintain required certification.
4.Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing, in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulation 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.

The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.

Services focus on flexible, wraparound goals & plans that support each youth's ongoing development of age appropriate social, emotional, academic and pre-vocational wellbeing. Responsibilities A young adult mentor is someone who has personal experience living with and recovering from mental health needs, substance use, and/or traumatic life concerns which caused challenges in one or more areas of life. They provide strength based, peer- to- peer education, coaching, modeling, guidance and support to youth in a variety of setting, including home, school, community, group home and other out- of-home settings. They are trained to share their lived experience with purpose and intent and inspire hope and motivation in a youth who is struggling with similar concerns. A young adult mentor is responsible to collaborate with the youth, "chosen" family, treatment providers, supports, school and other service providers to ensure that there is continuity of the Young Adult Peer Mentoring service approach. This, also, includes collaborating on goal development, crisis planning, and problem solving in partnership with the youth, parent/caregiver, and other service and support persons as necessary. Qualifications * Applicant must be a young adult, who has personal experience living with and recovering from mental health needs, substance use, and/or traumatic life concerns which caused challenges in one or more areas of life. * (a) has 2 years of experience as a Young Adult Peer Mentor, (b) has successfully completed an advanced peer to peer training program (such as Certified Peer Specialist training), (c) has 1 year of experience of providing supervision, or (d) has as a Bachelor's degree in a human services related field. * Minimum of a high school diploma or GED/HiSET. * Valid driver's license and vehicle. * Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, including Word. * CPR, First Aid, MAP (Medication Administration Program) and SOLVE (Strategies of Limiting Violent Episodes) certified or certifiable.
