POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Coordinator of Student Disability Services and Academic Support, this Student Worker is responsible for engaging and supporting new students in their onboarding at TKU through one-on-one interactions and group meetings. Peer Mentors are knowledgeable guides and success advocates for students and serve as an important resource for students to navigate through TKU new student orientation and academic success. This position requires maintaining good academic standing, integrity, confidentiality, and compliance (FERPA).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain regular contact with newly admitted students through the student onboarding process (Fall, Spring and Summer) to enhance the student experience.

  • Ensure all new students are successfully enrolled in the TKU New Student Orientation Course

  • Respond to all emails and other communication in a timely manner.

  • Develop and maintain a trusting relationship with students and guide them:

  • Through the New Student Orientation Course

  • Through becoming connected to Student Success resources by navigating them to appropriate department workshops, tutoring services, and other campus resources as needed.

  • Facilitate (1) Student Success Peer Group per semester or as assigned by the Director of Student Success

  • Communicate with the Coordinator of Student Disability Services and Academic Support any new student issues/concerns to ensure appropriate follow-up with student.

University-Wide Responsibilities

  • Utilize effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly both internally and publicly.

  • Participate in professional development activities that are aligned with University, departmental and individual goals.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by governing entities (DOE, TRACS, ABHE, etc.); file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.

  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled at the university

  • Enrolled in at least 6 hours undergrad or 4 hours graduate courses

  • 3.0 or better cumulative GPA and unofficial transcript

  • Two Faculty recommendations are required

  • Maturity in dealing with confidential and personal information

  • Knowledge of University Student Resources

  • Desire to help students succeed

  • Possess active listening skills and tools to engage in inclusive conversation

  • Proficient in spoken and written English

  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive in dealing with issues that may arise.

  • Ability to organize, multitask, prioritize and work under pressure

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
