Department Summary

The mission of the University of Denver Health & Counseling Center (HCC) is to provide exceptional, inclusive, integrated health care. We promote student success and wellness through education, advocacy, and outreach to the University of Denver community. The HCC is an on-campus facility that provides a wide range of on-site medical and mental health services. Physicians, nurses, psychologists, health educators, and other professional staff the HCC. All students enrolled for academic credit (full- time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate) may use HCC services. The mission of Health Promotion is to cultivate a thriving DU community through education, engagement, and sociocultural change. Health Promotion provides education and programming to the campus community on topics of well-being, mental health, healthy masculinities, alcohol and other drugs, sexual health, and interpersonal violence prevention. Position Summary

The Peer Education Program Assistant holds a part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) appointment within the HCC's Department of Health Promotion. In collaboration with their supervisor, the Program Assistant supervises and coordinates the Thrive Peer Education program and is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising undergraduate peer educators. The program assistant is also responsible for assisting with various health promotion activities, including outreach and campus-wide events. This position requires strong leadership, program development skills, and communication skills as well as the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. The program assistant will collaborate with other members of the Health Promotion team and may also collaborate with members of other HCC and campus departments. This position reports to the Coordinator of Health Promotion for Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) and Peer Education.

This is a non-benefited position not to exceed 1,000 hours in a calendar year.

Essential Functions

Programming and Advising

  • Work with supervisor to oversee all aspects of the Thrive Peer Education program

  • Plan and lead Thrive Peer Educator team meetings in collaboration with supervisor

  • Recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate Thrive Peer Educators

  • Advise and coordinate peer educators' activities and communications

  • Coordinate logistics of and manage communications for Intervene: DU, the required bystander intervention training for all incoming students

  • Infuse principles and practices of Inclusive Excellence, diversity, and equity throughout all aspects of the Thrive Peer Education program

  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of campus health promotion programs

  • Some evening and weekend hours will be required

Departmental Duties

  • Attend weekly Health Promotion team meetings with potential to occasionally co-lead meeting discussions

  • Attend HCC all-staff meetings

  • Assist with HP team communications including monitoring the email inbox.

  • Attend SAIE events and meetings as assigned

  • Collaborate with other HCC and campus departments

  • Demonstrate an on-going commitment to Inclusive Excellence, diversity, and equity

  • Other Responsibilities and duties as assigned

Supervision & Training

The Peer Education Program Assistant will receive extensive and ongoing training on multiple facets of Health education, programming, and administrative processes through an on-boarding orientation prior to the start of the academic year and regular staff meetings. The Peer Education Program Assistant will receive a regular 1:1 meeting to focus on professional development and discuss career goals. The Peer Education Program Assistant is paired with the Coordinator of Health Promotion for Alcohol and Other Drugs and Peer Educations, who acts as a supervisor and mentor on work projects and personal professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have an earned Bachelor's degree

  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and equity

  • Excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal and communications skills

  • Ability to work independently and as a team member

  • Genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, faculty, and staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience planning, implementing, and/or evaluating health promotion activities

  • Experience, interest, or strong knowledge related to health and wellbeing

  • Strong knowledge of student development theories and concepts

  • Supervisory experience

Work Environment

  • Standard office environment.

  • Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.

  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.

  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Work Schedule

This position requires 20-24 hours per week for fall, winter, and spring quarters with flexibility in scheduling. Some evening/weekend hours required. In compliance with Colorado's Healthy Families and Workplaces Act (HFWA), non-benefited employees accrue one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 48 hours per year.

Hourly Range

The hourly range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00 depending on experience.

This position is eligible for a federal work-study, which requires eligibility through the Financial Aid Office. This position is also open to non-work study funded students, and external applicants. The Program Assistant will be paid with the opportunity for yearly increases, dependent on performance.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
