General Summary of Position:

The professional nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive care in an ambulatory setting for patients in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. . Responsibilities include assessment of physical and psychosocial needs, patient education, and the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products along with other infusion therapies. The nurse evaluates the patient's response to interventions and implements appropriate changes and also assist in symptom management, coordination of internal and external resources, triaging unexpected patient visits and facilitating communication between all members of the health care team. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Qualifications:

  • EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: ADN required, B.S.N. preferred.

  • LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse; APON Oncology certification preferred. Chemotherapy certification required within 3 months of hire.

  • EXPERIENCE:Minimum of five years experience in Pediatric care, Pediatric Oncology background a plus; ambulatory care experience preferred.

  • SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Excellent phlebotomy skills, Experience with electronic medical record documentation.

  • Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment of a designated patient population's physical, psychosocial and educational needs. Identifies goals, and evaluates the patient's response to interventions.

  • Provides the patient and family/significant other with information (oral, written, or audio-visual) regarding diagnosis treatment, potential side effects, symptom management, and resources available within and outside MGUH. This may be face-to-face or via telephone.

  • Administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products according to policy and procedure. Obtains blood samples from Central Venous Access devices according to policy and procedure.

  • Provides psychosocial support to patient/family/significant other throughout their care experience. The nurse identifies and coordinates resources for the patient, i.e. counseling services, support groups, etc.

  • Supports biomedical research at the Lombardi Cancer Research Center through specimen collection, patient education and continuous review of current research and new technologies.

  • Contributes to his/her own professional growth and development through attendance at national and/or regional conferences, reading and sharing current literature, and identifying knowledge or skill needs.

  • Triages patients who "walk-in' to the outpatient department. Identifies and prioritizes needs, initiates appropriate treatment(s), and communicates with the clinical fellow, Attending Physician and if applicable, Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant.

Pediatric Transplant Unit – C5-1 C5-1 is a 15 bed state-of-the-art Pediatric Transplant Unit, serving patients receiving care for life-saving organ transplants, including liver, small bowel and multi-organ transplants (liver, stomach, small bowel, kidney, pancreas and colon). As one of only seven centers that perform pediatric small bowel and multi-visceral organ transplants, the Transplant Center for Children is the nation's third largest transplant program. In fact, we perform five times as many transplants as the average transplant program. Our Pediatric Transplant Team provides complex medical and surgical care for patients regionally, nationally and internationally. Our team is notable for its high success rates, history of innovation, cohesive teamwork and family-friendly approach to the transplant process. The nurses on C5-1 work in collaboration with physicians, registered dieticians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers, physical/occupational/speech therapists, clinical technicians and child-life specialists to deliver high-quality care, transplant-focused care. Through the help of our full-time Clinical Educator, our nurses are trained to care for patients requiring telemetry monitoring, high-risk medications and in-depth discharge teaching. The nursing team on C5-1 is a highly educated and motivated group of professionals who actively participate in shared governance, continuing education, and attend regional and national conferences. Qualifications: * EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing preferred. * LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse upon hire; certification in Basic Life Support. Certification in specialty or related specialty preferred. * EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria, at least two (2) years recent acute care experience in the relevant patient care area. Experience with Cerner (SurgiNet) Computerized Charting System is an preferred. * SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to set priorities and work under stress.
