VCU's Payroll Services Department has an exciting opportunity for a Payroll Operations Manager to join our team!

Position Summary:

The duties of the Payroll Operations Manager include but are not limited to the following:

  • Directs maintenance and revision of all Payroll related functions of the Banner system.

  • Manages computer system issues related to Payroll processing, including training, reporting, problem solving and enhancement proposals.

  • Ensures the integrity of data in the University's computer systems, including Human Resources and Payroll systems.

  • Ensures institutional compliance with Federal, State and University policies, guidelines and procedures relative to Payroll.

  • Provides leadership to the Payroll Operational staff (3 Payroll Specialists) and assist in directing payroll operations in the absence of the Director.

  • Ensures that all payrolls are processed accurately and timely and in accordance with all Federal and State laws.

  • Coordinates daily processes.

  • Provides examples of best business practices as needed.

  • This is a hybrid position that requires the incumbent to work in the office at least 2 days per week, with the possibility of additional on-site days as needed.

  • On-site training is required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate degree with major emphasis in accounting or business administration or equivalent experience in higher education, payroll operations and payroll administration.

  • Strong technical and functional knowledge of HR/Payroll systems.

  • Experience with higher education payroll and/or VRS reportable payroll.

  • Extensive experience with operational aspects of automated payroll processing systems.

  • Significant knowledge of governmental accounting, generally accepted payroll practices, generally accepted auditing standards, and tax law.

  • Significant knowledge of payroll operations in an automated environment and ability to transfer those skills to staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide supervision and leadership to staff regarding operations and meeting critical deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate clearly, orally and in writing, with employees of various levels within the University.

  • Ability to use office automation, word processing, etc., software.

  • Strong mathematical/accounting skills.

  • Ability to provide quality customer service in a professional manner.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • Reconciliation knowledge preferred.
