Ferrum College is currently seeking its next payroll administrator/accountant. The successful candidate will be highly skilled and organized and will be responsible for accurate and timely processing of faculty, staff, and student payroll, and for the college's cash receipts function.

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare faculty, staff, and student payrolls, including time-sheet entry and related journal entries.

  • Calculate and submit payroll taxes and maintain payroll tax spreadsheet.

  • Prepare quarterly and annual federal and multistate payroll tax reports, including 941, VA, VEC, and W-2 forms.

  • Retain working knowledge of Colleague Self-Service Time Entry, and train new supervisors as necessary on the usage of both.

  • Reconcile all payroll-related liability accounts.

  • Work with Human Resources staff to ensure accurate compensation amounts, payroll deductions, and annual pay rate adjustments.

  • Receive all payments from students, including student account payments, confirmation deposits, and application fees.

  • Enter student account payments and cash deposits from various areas into Colleague Student Cash Receipts. Create receipts as required and prepare bank deposits. Pick up deposit bags from the bank.

  • Monitor operating account transactions, print previous day detail report, and post receipt entries as necessary.

  • Assist accounting specialist with bank reconciliations and investigate and correct bank statement reconciliation items on a monthly basis.

  • Assist director of budgets with collection of data for cash forecasting.

  • Process Ferrum student loan payments and maintain subsidiary spreadsheets.

  • Prepare sales and meals tax reports, submit sales tax payment online, and prepare Reimbursable Expense Form for submission of meals tax payments.

  • Assist with other Business Office functions as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or three years of payroll, cashiering, and/or accounts receivable experience.

  • One to three years of payroll, cashiering, and accounts receivable experience.

  • Knowledge of accounting practices.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to three years in college fund accounting.

  • Experience in multistate payroll requirements for out-of-state employees.
