Position Title Payroll Manager Location Appleton Department Human Resources Position Type Staff Position Description & Qualifications
Reports to: Assistant VP of HR
Location: 1025 Administrative Building
The Payroll Manager is the subject matter expert for university payroll process and will provide technical expertise for the biweekly payroll process and reporting. The Payroll Manager will assist with analysis and reporting for planning, forecasting and budgeting. They will be responsible for both internal and external payroll reporting and will take an active role in re-engineering business processes with the goal of achieving optimal operational effectiveness and efficiency.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Payroll Administration
Analyze, prepare, process and distribute all payroll transactions for faculty, staff, and assist with students, as needed, to ensure all deadlines are met.
Audit payroll data to ensure accuracy and adherence to all payroll policies and procedures.
Maintain necessary documentation for payroll records such as W-4, I-9, and direct deposit authorizations.
Process child support orders, garnishments, and levies and remit funds to appropriate agencies.
Balance benefits and deductions.
Tax Compliance
Prepare and timely file required government tax filings and reports.
Coordinate treaty exempt amounts for students and employees and apply accordingly.
Process W2s and 1042 year-end filing.
Benefit Administration
Prepare and transmit contribution data for the retirement plan.
Assist with gathering discrimination testing information, 403(b) audit information, and annual audit information.
Coordinate worker's compensation reporting.
Other Duties
Assist the Payroll Coordinator with student employment and work study reporting requirements.
Coordinate and analyze student salary budgets.
Assists with process improvement and redesign initiatives to drive out ineffective and inefficient business processes, applying best practices and fully leveraging technology.
Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers at all times through timely and accurate responses.
Participate in continuing education activities such as APA membership and meeting attendance, participating in other pertinent trainings, and staying abreast to applicable tax and payroll changes.
All other projects and duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Demonstrated ability to organize work flow and follow through on projects, assignments and daily responsibilities in accordance with deadlines and priority level.
High degree of detail orientation and accuracy.
Strong problem-solving skills through data gathering and analysis.
Demonstrated ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and written with internal and external customers.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree in a related field and 2+ years equivalent work experience.
Prior experience with in payroll for higher education strongly preferred
Proficient computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
