Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for overseeing the operation of County-wide paving crew; operates and maintains an asphalt distributor and light to heavy road construction equipment; and performs related duties as required.
Working Location: Southton Service Center: (9874 Southton Rd.)
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises and coordinates daily operations of road crew in the completion of County-wide paving projects
Operates and maintains a fully automatic asphalt distributor
Operates and maintains asphalt transport truck and other paving equipment
Monitors and assesses utilization of equipment and materials
Maintains equipment and machinery in safe operating condition
Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate, and four (4) years' experience operating light to heavy road construction equipment with emphasis on paving; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience
Knowledge of the mechanical operations and maintenance of road construction equipment; good knowledge of paving equipment operation; knowledge of safety standards and practices
Skill in the operation of hand tools; skill in the operation of road surfacing equipment and asphalt distributors; skill in performing basic mathematical calculations
Ability to perform mechanical repairs; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to prepare paving mixtures; ability to supervise paving crew; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the public
Must have a valid Texas Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with Tank, Air Brakes and Hazardous Materials Endorsements
Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
Required to be on-call 24-hours a day
May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Working conditions are primarily outside with exposure to temperature variations; occasional exposure to insects, insect and animal bites, poisonous plants, oily and damp/wet surfaces, dust, high noise areas, unfavorable fumes and vapors and hazardous chemicals.
Frequently moves items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally moves items weighing up to 100 pounds
Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
Positions self to perform essential functions
Must be able to remain in a stationary position
