Our staff includes a nationally-recognized team of specialized ophthalmic surgeons and optometric physicians, with vast clinical experience in a wide variety of eye surgical services.

  • Provide excellent patient care and service to our patients, greeting them and checking them in, taking payments, and other front desk responsibilities.
  • Schedule ophthalmic surgeries for the ambulatory surgery center including verifying authorizations, set appointments for pre-surgery testing, schedule post-op appointments, confirm all IOLs, etc. are ordered for surgery, check health issues, meds for possible needed pre-authorization, and verify that equipment required for surgery is available at external locations.
  • Coordinate, complete and verify all required surgery paperwork according to established procedures.
  • Communicate thoroughly with patient regarding pre-op requirements.
  • Facilitate patient surgery day including completing any outstanding paperwork with patient, complete chart for surgery staff, complete charts after surgery, and fax follow-up to Optometrists.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 6 months of post-secondary education and/or training.
  • Minimum two-year Ophthalmology or medical clinic experience in surgery scheduling or patient services a must.
  • Position requires a good understanding of ophthalmic practice and insurance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, Windows environment, and strong keyboarding skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and active team participation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, surgeons, co-workers and supervisor is critical.
  • Must be willing to help in all areas, have flexibility and effectively work in a team environment.

Position Purpose: The responsibilities of this position are principally to facilitate, educate and communicate to patients Virginia Mason Medical Center's revenue cycle policies and procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, responding to patient inquiries/complaints regarding all billing aspects of a hospital based medical facility as well as maximizing reimbursement of self pay receivables via payment schedules, assessment for in-house charity programs or eligibility for state-sponsored insurance plans. This position will proficiently perform duties as outlined below in one of the following areas: Patient Account Specialist or Patient Service Specialist. Principal Responsibilities: * PATIENT ACCOUNT SPECIALIST A. In a high call volume setting, provides clarification and education to, as well as research of, patient billing concerns and complaints. Addresses broad range of inquiries covering items such as insurance regulation and processing protocols, charge coding discrepancies, benefit interpretation and adjudication. B. Provides financial counseling both in advance and post receipt of services. Provides assistance with reimbursement for under or un-insured individuals (including uncompensated care). C. Collects on private receivables and may participate in collection agency processes (ie: court appearances) D. Acts as resource to Medical Center for organizational, state, federal and commercial reimbursement procedures and policies as they may pertain to individual patient situations. * PATIENT SERVICE SPECIALIST A. Provides financial counseling in advance of services, collects prepayments, and provides cost estimates to patients, payers and providers. B. Responds to patient inquiries regarding benefits and charges C. Provides assistance with reimbursement to under or un-insured patients D. Provides bedside financial counseling services E. Acts as a resource to the medical center for organization, state and federal reimbursement procedures, policies and individual patient status situations. This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Proven excellent customer service, communication, verbal and written skills with an emphasis on organization and attention to detail; ability to problem solve and multi-task; keep confidences; knowledge of insurance concepts; ability to meet and exceed service components of this position; demonstrated basic telephone skills (transfer, conference, placing a patient on hold); excel in a team based environment with a positive attitude; comfortable with ambiguity and the ability to be flexible. 6 months previous call center, health care experience and medical terminology is preferred for this position.
