Job Title:

Patient Services Specialist

Responsible for all aspects of scheduling, pre-registration and financial clearance functions associated with the respective specialty procedures. Responsibilities include collection and validation of accurate patient demographic and insurance information, obtaining pre-certification/authorization, scheduling the patient for outpatient and inpatient services, and entering information into multiple outpatient and inpatient systems. Other responsibilities include serving as the primary liasion with the patient, physician and hospital related to financial aspect of services.

Ensures that all pre-operative requirements have been completed, including scheduling surgeries, pre-admission testing, scheduling for outside medical evaluations related to surgery,and pre-operative teaching classes.

Initiates the insurance verification and pre-authorization process by contacting insurance carriers and providing proof of needed documentation.

Works closely with involved providers to pre-certify procedures and other necessary evaluations or processes; assists with denial and appeal process.

Reviews benefits, cost and coverage with patients and assesses their potential financial liability, and answers applicable questions. Completes all documentation for processes for both outpatient and inpatient services.

Proactively communicates issues or potential issues involving customer service and process improvement opportunities to management and providers.

Demonstrates a willingness and ability to work collaboratively with others for concise and timely flow of information. Maintains stable performance under pressure and handles stress in ways to maintain relationships with patients, customers and co-workers.

Required minimum education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: two years experience in a similar health care role.

Medical Assistant-PP/Occ Health Works within the scope of the Medical Assistant practice, and in alignment with standards of excellence and quality, provides patient care under the direction of the provider. Under the direction of the provider, contributes to the completion of a comprehensive assessment and documentation of patient/family needs. Identifies significant changes in patient condition through data collection and reports them to the provider. Understands and adheres to the legal responsibilities and requirements within the medical assistant role. Under the direction of the provider, participates in planning and implementing care for patients within the scope of Medical Assisting practice. Understands how to troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource. Demonstrates standards of excellence in care in all interactions, for both internal and external customers. Maintains necessary certifications as needed including annual required competency skills, utilizing these as resources for patient/family teaching and education under the direction of the provider. Maintains a safe and supportive environment, by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner, ensuring availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment. Maintains skills for cross training to meet patient care and day to day operational needs. This may include travel to other facilities for Mercy Health providers, or adjusting hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the manager. Required Minimum High School Diploma or GED Required additional qualifications: Diploma or certificate from a medical assistant program, or RMA or CMA certification, or three of last five years working as a medical assistant.
