Job Summary:

The Patient Safety Assistant will work under direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or qualified medical staff to observe and divert any harmful activity or movement by the patient; this includes providing close and continuous observation of adolescent, adult and elderly patients who may be unsafe to themselves or others.

Principle Responsibilities

  • Observes patient under the supervision and direction of a RN to protect patient's safety and maximize comfort.

  • Provides constant monitoring and observation to protect patient's safety.

  • Requests immediate attention from the patient care staff to secure patient's safety.

  • Notify RN immediately if any of the following are observed: shortness of breath, increased or decreased breathing rate, patient complaints of pain, new cough or an increase in coughing, complaints of chills, nausea or vomiting, increased thirst, changes in skin color, new drainage from any body orifice or urine - color, odor or amount.

  • Call for help immediately if the patient: attempts harm to self or others, displays unanticipated aggressive behavior, displays any change in medical condition or mental status, report chest pain immediately.

  • May assist with meals.

  • Provide pillow, blankets or beverages upon request and if appropriate.

  • May assist with care giving skills such as: turning the patient and linen changes.

  • Other duties as assigned.

VIEW JOBS 12/2/2022 12:00:00 AM 2023-03-02T00:00 <p>Part Time - PT</p><p>462 Grider Street</p><p>Service/Skilled &amp; Trade</p><p>Day Shift</p><p>AFSCME 2015 GRP 03 - $13.271 - $16.318</p><p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing supportive nursing care to hospitalized patients at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. <br><br> The incumbent provides routine indirect care to patients in accordance with the policies and regulations of Federal, State and local authorities, as well as accepted standards of practice. Works is performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.</p><p>TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:</p><p>Cares for personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aides, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;</p><p>Provides patient care to meet their nutritional needs including passing and collecting diet trays and nourishment, set up trays and adaptive feeding equipment;</p><p>Transfers patient from bed to cart/chair/wheelchair and back with assistance from clinical staff utilizing transfer assist devices such as mechanical lifts when necessary;</p><p>Transports patients utilizing wheelchair, Geri-chair, stretcher or bed;</p><p>Assists with ambulation as appropriate;</p><p>Assists clinical staff with turning and positioning of patients in accordance with policies and procedures;</p><p>Responds appropriately to life threatening emergencies;</p><p>Answers call lights and informs staff of patient needs;</p><p>Makes unoccupied beds;</p><p>Monitors stock and notifies appropriate staff member for ordering replacements;</p><p>Changes water for patients;</p><p>Changes glove boxes;</p><p>Provides stock items as needed to nursing staff.</p><p>IN ADDITION, IF ASSIGNED TO LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY:</p><p>Performs or assists in transporting of new patients from hospital to Long-Term Care Facility as well as to and from clinic appointments on the Erie County Medical Center campus;</p><p>Passes and empties bedpans and urinals and provides proper care for incontinent patients and residents;</p><p>Assists in feeding including passing and collecting trays and nourishments, setting up meals and adaptive eating equipment, feeding patients and residents, cleaning patients and residents after eating and cleaning eating area.</p><p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITITES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of accepted standards of patient care practice; working knowledge of standard precautions; working knowledge of infection control precautions; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to get along well with others and work as a team member; positive and willing attitude; demonstrates flexibility as patient care needs change; patience; physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodate.</p><p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:</p><p>Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma.</p><p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:</p><p>Possession of Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification at time of permanent appointment.</p><p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ASSIGNMENT TO LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY:</p><p>Possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment.</p><p>NOTE: Verifiable part time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full time experience requirements.</p><br> Ecmc Buffalo NY
