We are hiring a parent with past child welfare involvement to help parents who

currently have DCF in their life. We want to support parents with a peer who

understands because they have lived it.

Position Summary:

Provides direct peer support to educate, mentor and advocate for child welfare involved parents. Trains parents with standard curriculum and one on one mentoring on trauma's impact on child behavior and parenting. Employs peer support skills to create a safe learning environment for trauma knowledge, parenting techniques, and system supports that will be utilized for reunification and parenting success.

Coordinates service delivery, provides case management, and advocates for community-based social services for children and their families. Explains service delivery and teaches patients how to navigate some aspects of the health care system themselves.

II. Major Responsibilities:

Provides one to one support to educate, mentor and advocate for child welfare involved parents in the context of parent and child trauma. Utilizes the Breakthrough Parenting Curriculum and other materials to teach trauma concepts to the parent in individual and group settings. Provides mentoring to child welfare involved parents, remaining flexible and responsive to the needs of each family.

Working as an integrated member of the primary medical care team, meets with patients, parents of patients, facilitates access to and coordinates delivery of mental health and social services, which may include but is not limited to health insurance, medication, therapy, transportation, educational resources. May assist with development of patient education materials and community resource list. Delivers standard curriculum for child welfare involved parents in group and individual settings. Provides education, information, and liaison support to specialized intervention programs, including but not limited to substance abuse child welfare, parenting, mental health and prevention services. Advocates and works to resolve problems of patient access to these services. Follows up with patients to complete and evaluate social service referrals, working with medical team to access supports. Functions as a navigator among service providers and community resources, both within the institution and the community, including state and local government as necessary. Maintains ongoing communication/collaboration with clinical team, acting as a resource and referral source. Attends periodic UMMHC team meetings to improve program. Attends staff education meetings. Receives training at least annually to maintain current knowledge applicable to program including medical care and resources as they affect the social service needs of patients. Participates in community-based meetings to stay current on new and evolving resources. Develops relationships with community-based health resources. Adheres to regulatory policies and procedures relative to the program.

  1. Experience as consumer of child welfare services as parent

  2. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form

  3. Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation

Preferred:

Bilingual in English and Spanish. Prior substance use, homelessness, domestic violence, mental health concerns and other traumas that have been successfully managed are helpful. Knowledge of excel, word, and basic office skills Experience using virtual platforms such as Zoom

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
