GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Central Transport Service provides safe, courteous, and timely "patient centered" transport of patients, patient

equipment and patient related items throughout Brigham and Women's Hospital. Escort Transporters spend most of

their day managing the more challenging transport assignments, training staff, reporting and /or referring all complex or

unresolved issues to the supervisors and completing general escort responsibilities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Transports patients in stretchers, beds or wheelchairs to the test sites for testing and back to their rooms once the test is

completed. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, treatment areas

and other patient services. Transports specimens to the lab, as required and transport patients to lobby areas upon

discharges.

  • Receive assignments via Pagers and two way phones from dispatchers or supervisors. Enter pickups and completion of

assignments in the bed system by using the telephony systems as trained

  • Responds to simple patient requests, communicating more complex needs to the RN. Provides supportive customer

service, functioning as part of the patient care team and demonstrating appropriate behavior in interactions with staff,

patients and visitors.

  • Uses germicidal wipes and disposable gloves to disinfect transport equipment prior to patient transport and at the

completion of the assignment.

  • Follows infection control guidelines and safety protocols when transporting patients and patient equipment.

  • Follow proper safety protocol when assigned to pick up patients from the Helipad.

  • Transports, cleans, tags and returns to designated storage area: IV poles, monitors, wheelchairs, stretchers, pumps,

scales, lift and other patient equipment as directed by supervisor

  • Maintains neatness and organization of work and storage areas. Collects, disinfects and stores transport and patient

equipment.

  • High School diploma or equivalent.

  • 1 year experience as an escort at BWH preferred.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.

  • Ability to stand, carry, push and pull 50-80 lbs.

  • Ability to operate elevator, radios, pagers, and other equipment in a professional manner

  • Ability to perfom keyboard

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work requires prolonged walking, standing, and pushing patient transportation vehicles. Lifting and guiding patients onto transportation vehicles with assistance of other personnel.

Strips and refinishes floor, shampoos/extracts carpets, mats and furniture. Washes walls, floors, doors, windows etc. Sets up conference rooms. Heavy lifting. At times, may be required to do Aide I and Aide II work as necessary. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Occasionally helps to train new employees to perform assigned tasks. * Selects materials, supplies, and equipment from designated areas. Loads supplies onto cart and transports work cart to assigned areas. * Sweeps, dust mops and wet-mops hard and resilient floors of assigned areas according to procedures. May use auto-scrubber or other types of powered equipment to clean or polish floors. * Dry dusts, damp dusts and washes horizontal and vertical surfaces, such as walls, doors, partitions, as well as ledges, pipes, corners, and other hard-to-reach surfaces using step stools or ladders as necessary. * Dusts, washes and polishes moveable and fixed furniture and equipment items such as tables, desks, file cabinets and waste receptacles as required. * Cleans and polishes mirrors, stainless steel, brass, and other decorative materials as necessary. Removes graffiti. * Vacuums, spot cleans carpeted floors and weather mats. * Moves and arranges furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion after cleaning. * Sanitizes and disinfects sinks, toilets, showers, bathtubs and other restroom fixtures and accessories. Refills dispensers as required. * Strips, cleans and remakes beds/stretchers upon patient discharge / transfer according to departmental procedures. * Disposes of waste and linen, including contaminated and/or pathological and chemotherapy waste according to procedures. Relines receptacles with clean bags. Transports trash and linen to designated areas. Removes full needle boxes and replaces with empty ones. * Reports facility repair needs to the immediate supervisor / designated person as necessary. * Returns unused supplies to designated areas and cleans and performs simple maintenance on manual and/or powered equipment. * Empties and transports recycle containers. Processes recycled paper according to HIPAA regulations. * Assists in disaster response drills. * Removes, prepares for cleaning and re-hangs draperies, cubicle curtains and shades as required.
