Overview:

Under the direction of the RN or LPN, assists in the individualized care of the patient to achieve the patient's highest level of wellness. Works cooperatively with others as part of a team; recognizes the importance of group goals.

Performs designated clinical procedures and non-clinical support tasks essential to providing care to the patient. Performs technical skills such as dressing changes, tube feedings, suctioning, catheter inserted after proper instruction has been given. Assists in unit operational support tasks or duties. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, guiding principles and mercy service standards.

Position Located at Mercy Rehab Hospital in Chesterfield/St. Louis, MO

Our state-of-the-art facility was designed specifically for patients requiring in-patient rehabilitation services and offers programs that range from single therapies to comprehensive, multidisciplinary programs.

Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital provides rehabilitative care to patients and families utilizing a team approach. Our Treatment Team includes experienced Rehabilitation Nurses who provide excellent service and around-the-clock compassionate nursing care in an exceptional work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: High school diploma, G.E.D. and/or current co-worker of St. John's Mercy.

  • Other: Successful completion of Basic Skills I course and Basic Skills II course.

Certification; Current Nursing student with completion of nursing fundamentals course within 90 days of employment; Previous documented work experience as a PCT, Nurse Assistant, EMT or Surgical Tech within the last 3 years or Successful completion of an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel program within the last 3 years. Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, the Patient Care Technician is responsible for performing non-licensed patient care in accordance with established Nursing Standards and Hospital Policies. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values. This position is a on-licensed/certified staff memeber authorized to transport and/or stock medications to meet specified essential job duties. This includes staff who do not have the authority to prescribe,dispense and/or administer medications. Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent 1. Performs general, non-licensed respiratory procedures: 5% a. oximetry spot checks b. oxygen set-ups, tank exchange 2. Assist patients with mobility needs: 20% a. transfers b. turning and repositioning in bed c. maintaining a clean and safe room environment d. assisting patient to bathroom e. transporting to tests or other hospital locations 3. Performs other patient care activities to include, but not limited to: 48% a. simple skin care b. oral hygiene c. partial bath d. complete bath e. shaving f. bed making (unoccupied and occupied) g. foley care and emptying and recording output from foley catheters h. providing bedpan or urinal as needed i. weigh patients j. application and reapplication of SCD's, TED hose, Aqua K pads, cold packs k. passing trays, water, juice and snacks l. administering ice chips* m. feeding patients n. assisting with menu pick up/delivery and food cart transfer as needed o. applying restraints (bed alarms) as directed p. I&O q. obtain vital signs (temp, pulse, respirations, blood pressure) r. emptying drains and ostomy bags, recording output s. changing non sterile dressing changes t. assisting with after death care u. pain assessment screening v. uretheral catherization w. venipuncture x. blood sugar monitoring y. assisting with observation of suicide patients 4. Maintains CPR status 1% 5. Performs 12 Lead ECG 5% 6. Performs patient care rounds on patients at least every 2 hours. 5% 7. Performs procedures related to specimen collection, reporting abnormal values to RN 8% a. sputum, urine, stool 8. Takes inventory of supplies and equipment and restocks as necessary 1% 9. Responds to STAT/RRT 1% 10. Transports supplies, mail , labs etc 1% 11. Performs other work duties as assigned 4% 12. Completed a professional or practical nursing program outside of the US and are awaiting license examination in the US. e. Have completed an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel program in Missouri in the last 3 years. OR f. Must be able to complete the required classroom and clinical education within 90 days of start date. 2. Successful completion of orientation classes as deemed by education. 3. Successful completion of the 'Application Profile' questions regarding experiences at work/school, problem solving and work situations. 4. Verbal and cognitive ability. 5. May be required to rotate shifts because of hospital's 24 hour per day 7 days a week operation. May be required to work on other patient care units as needed. 6. Able to address specific age related needs of the patient. Nursing divisions may provide care to neonates/infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric adults. 7. Basic Life Support completion within 3 months of hire. Maintain competency in safe medication handlingCOMPETENCY WILL BE VALIDATED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY THREE YEARS. STANDARDS DENOTING AN ANNUAL OR MORE FREQUENT COMPETENCY VALIDATION ARE LOCATED IN THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE. COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE REQUIRED ANNUALLY. PARTICIPATION IN A BLS, IS REQUIRED EVERY TWO YEARS. Working Conditions Employee is required to sit occasionally, stand continuously, and walk frequently. Employee must lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.) medium (21-50 lbs.) and heavy (50 lbs. +) load frequently. Employee may be required to lift over 100 lbs. with assistance. Employee is frequently required to bend, squat, crawl, kneel, climb, lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens. Occasionally: 1-33%, Frequently: 34-66%, Continuously: 67-100% The most significant of duties are included but this does not exclude occasional work assignments not mentioned or developmental duties. Job Relationships: Member of a comprehensive healthcare team, including other health care providers, the patient, the patients family and significant others.
