  • Job Summary

  • Assists in providing direct and indirect patient care according to established procedures. Provides care for the adult and geriatric population under the direction and supervision of an RN.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training

  • High School Diploma or completion of a certified nursing assistant, medical corpsman program or 6 months equivalent experience in an acute care setting preferred.

  • If a student in an accredited school of professional nursing, must have completed fundamentals of nursing and one clinical rotation and have a CNA license


  • Experience

  • Minimum 6 months equivalent experience in Hospital setting.

  • Current Nursing school students


  • License/Certification/Registration

  • CPR Certification

  • CNA Licensure


  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English.

  • Basic Computer skills to perform Data entry

  • Computerized clinical information systems: Clinicians View, Chart View.

  • HIPAA policies on Confidentiality.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clinical: Performs basic, routine and specialized tasks in assigned department, under the supervision of a registered nurse.

  • Meets patients needs (to include providing baths, linen changes, bedpans, water pitchers, etc.).

  • Assists with ambulation, positioning, elimination, personal hygiene, activities of daily living, routine comfort measures.

  • Transports patients and transfers patients between stretcher and bed and bed to chair.

  • Provides nourishments as requested and authorized by orders, including distribution and collection of meal trays as needed.

  • Participates in shift report, reports observations, unusual happenings to RN.

  • Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each patient in the delivery of services to them.

  • Observes, monitors, and reports changes in patient's condition, symptom, reactions or behavior as appropriate.

  • Rounds on all assigned patients based on established standards.

  • Environmental: Maintains a clean, safe, prepared work environment.

  • Prepares patient areas for admissions.

  • Cleans patient care equipment, as needed, or as assigned.

  • Distributes supplies to designated storage areas when they are delivered to unit.

  • Checks par levels of supplies and restocks as needed.

  • Maintains orderliness of utility, storage, nourishment and nursing station areas at the end of each shift.

  • Checks sterile supplies for sterility integrity, where applicable.

  • Administrative: Assists in the timely collection and accurate reporting of patient data.

  • Observes, monitors and records vital signs and nursing care procedures in the appropriate area of the clinical record.

  • Assures that documentation is accurate.

  • Development: Maintains current knowledge, certification, and licensure.

  • Identifies learning needs in self and initiates actions to address these education needs.

  • Attends continuing education programs in order to maintain certification.

  • Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department.

  • Completes all mandatory requirements, certifications, and licensure within allotted timeframe for completion (CPR, License, PPD, Competencies, Age Specifics, etc.)

  • Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments.

  • Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate

  • Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees.

  • Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit.

  • Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties

  • Consistently displays professionalism in interactions with patients and families, staff and physicians.

  • Maintains flexibility with schedule to meet departmental needs

Makes appointments, registers patients, collects co-payments, updates demographic and insurance information, and provides patients with follow-up appointments and requisitions for tests. * Minimum Qualifications * Education/Training * High school graduation or equivalent; completion of a medical terminology course preferred. * * Experience * 1 year experience in a medical record setting preferred; 1 year experience in a medical office or ambulatory health setting preferred, medical terminology course preferred. * * License/Certification/Registration * CPR certification preferred. * * Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Ability to type 40 words per minute. Basic computer skills preferred. * Primary Duties and Responsibilities * Assists with maintaining supply inventory. * Attends all scheduled meetings including, but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety, infection control, OSHA, CPR, and others as required. * Completes the registration/chart preparation process which includes the following: Determines patient's method of payment and verifies insurance (i.e., EVS, memberchek, etc.) Collects copayment and enters any payments into the system. Updates patient demographic and billing information. Preregisters patients as necessary. Updates patient demographic and billing information in the system. * Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. * Coordinates billing procedures (including the input of charges) and collects payment for fee-for service/ commercial insurance patients. Must perform end of shift reconciliation. * Demonstrates behavior consistent with MedStar Health mission, vision, goals, objectives and patient care philosophy. * Identifies obvious emergencies and alerts appropriate staff. * Maintains referral log/referral tracking system and distributes to appropriate provider and/or department. * Maintains the reception desk/waiting area in a neat and orderly fashion. * Performs other duties as assigned. * Prepares, updates, and copies forms, reports, and records on a routine basis. * Provides outreach for missed appointments. Monitors and tracks no shows and enters data into the system. * Receives patients and determines the reason for visiting the primary care health center. Distinguishes whether the patient is a walk-in or scheduled appointment and provides appropriate forms. * Receives telephone calls, provides telephone triage and disseminates messages in a timely and appropriate manner. * Schedules appointments including follow-up/referral appointments. Completes requisitions for tests. * Serves as the primary backup for the Health Information Assistant (if applicable) or is the principal resource for daily medical records activities.
