UPMC is hiring full-time Patient Care Technicians for a training program. If hired, you will be enrolled in a four week long, hands on, paid training program. The training is held during daylight hours, Monday through Friday only. After the training program, your full time PCT position will require rotating availability - including daylight, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Upon successful completion of the training program, you will be offered a full-time position at one of our four urban hospitals. Your full-time placement will be at UPMC Presbyterian, Shadyside, Mercy, or Magee Hospitals - and candidates must be open to all locations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Attend the four-week training program to learn the following skills/duties

  • UPMC nursing core Nursing Assistant responsibilities of blood glucose, weights, vital signs, intake and output, specimen collections and foley care

  • At least four of the following tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.

  • Activities of daily living and medical record documentation

  • Comply with all EIC PCT Training Program policies and procedures, including safety, personal conduct, and dress code


  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Must attend EIC training program if no previous hospital or pre-hospital training

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside are hiring students that are currently enrolled in a Nursing Program for casual nursing support positions for a variety of shifts and days. Casual employees typically work a minimum of 8 hours every two weeks. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay. Applicants without one semester of clinicals completed in a hospital setting will be provided and are required to successfully complete a training course. *This course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours and is mandatory*. If you are unable to attend a 7 day training, and you have not completed a hospital-based clinical rotation, this position will not be a good fit. Responsibilities: * Assisting patients with activities of daily living including assisting with bathing, dressing and other hygiene needs * Interacting and attending to patients and their families on a regular basis, to ensure patient satisfaction * Working hand in and hand with the nursing staff to report any changes in the patients well-being or changes in their conditions * Working directly with patients to re-position and assist them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed). * Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, collecting and measuring specimen * Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches. * Assisting patients with their nutritional needs, including food preparation and set up * Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units. * Depending upon the role, a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins. * Assisting with post-life physical care Qualifications * High School Diploma or equivalent. * Current enrollment in a Nursing School Program. * Completed one clinical rotation in a hospital setting. * Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
