Reporting to the Patient Care Manager and according to department standards, functions as a member of the Patient Care Team to provide appropriate basic care to patients based on the ages of the patients served on the units. This includes taking vital signs, assisting patients with activities of daily living, and observing patients for physical/emotional changes.
Records pertinent information in patient charts and communicates with other Patient Care Team Members to ensure continuity of care. The Patient Care Tech (PCT) performs any combination of the following duties in the care of patients in the hospital, under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The following are general characteristics of this job, although duties may vary by assigned shift.
High School graduate or equivalent.
Certification as nursing assistant or EMT-B mandatory or nursing student who has completed first year of training.
Must possess current cognitive knowledge in medical terminology and abbreviations.
Knowledge of the duties and responsibilities as described in the general summary.
The individual has an understanding of and practices patient confidentiality; displays problem identification and conflict resolution skills.
Work requires 4 to 6 weeks of unit-specific orientation and on-the-job training to become familiar with work routines, location of equipment and supplies, and develop proficiencies in patient care tech duties.
Work requires the interpersonal skills necessary to comfort patients, family members and/or significant others; and to communicate effectively with other patient care providers.
Skills and abilities:
Must be punctual, dependable and conscientious individual.
American Heart Association HealthCare Provider BLS CPR.

Good communication skills.
Understands and demonstrates aseptic technique and principles, universal precaution and isolation procedures.
Collects accurate patient data and complete documentation.
Able to operate selected hospital equipment,
Organizational and interpersonal skills.
Prior experience within the hospital environment is preferred, but not mandatory.
