Join UChicago Medicine, as a Patient Care Manager in the Neonatal ICU (NICU) at Comer Children's Hospital. The Patient Care Manager has the responsibility and accountability with the Nursing and Medical Directors for planning, organizing, and directing of all activities related to patient-centered care, fostering nursing excellence and the retention and recruitment of staff on a designated unit in the care center.

UChicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital located in Hyde Park, is a state-of-the-art 172-bed hospital dedicated to caring for infants, children, teens, and young adults. Offering a range of services from general care to groundbreaking treatments for the most complex medical conditions, Comer Children's is home to the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center on Chicago's South Side.

The Margaret M. and George A. Stephen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Comer Children's Hospital at the University of Chicago is among the largest in the Midwest, with approximately 1,000 admissions every year.

Our NICU features 47 designated tertiary care beds (Level III) and 18 convalescent (Level II) beds. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) can be provided for up to three infants at a time by a special group of ECMO specialists who supplement the NICU nursing staff.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to maintain an open network of communication among staff members, care center and sector leadership, and other health care professionals and departments.

  • Communicating with Patients and Customers, Adjusting to Patient and Customer Needs Respecting One Another, Maintaining an Appropriate Environment.

  • Uses a broad theoretical knowledge base and the principles of patient centered care to assist in the establishment of patient centered care standards.

  • Demonstrates clinical and leadership skills, serving as a role model for staff members.

  • Recognizes and identifies clinical practice problems and facilitates solutions.

  • Assists in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the budget within established guidelines.

  • Schedules staff in accordance with patient care needs and union contracts.

  • Provides and supports an environment which encourages staff to accept responsibility for learning as part of the development of their own professional practice.

  • Complies with standards and regulations of various licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies.

  • Demonstrates awareness of and compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an NLN accredited School of Nursing.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher

  • Current Illinois Registered Nurse license

  • Charge Nurse experience with demonstrated leadership skills

  • BLS Certification through the American Heart Association

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing

  • Pediatric RN experience

  • Specialty Certifications

  • RN experience in a Teaching Hospital

  • Progressive Leadership experience

Position Details

  • Full-Time, 1.0 FTE (40 hours)

  • Day shift, 8:00a - 5:00p, alternating weekend and on-call coverage required

  • Unit/Department: NICU

  • Non-Union

Must comply with UCMC's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process. This is in addition to your compliance with the Flu Vaccination requirement as well. Medical and religious exemptions will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check are also required for all employees prior to hire.
