Under the direction of a registered/licensed nurse (RN), the Patient Care Associate (PCA) as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team assists in clinical support functions to promote a safe, compassionate patient care environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with meeting direct patient care needs

  • Consistently fosters a healing environment with respect and kindness demonstrating respect for all individuals with sensitivity to cultural diversity

  • Contributes to the plan of care through ongoing communication with the RN

  • Assists with patient data and specimen collection

  • Assists with equipment preparation and set up

  • Supports a Culture of Safety by providing a safe and comfortable patient/family experience where risks are reduced and/or eliminated, by performing the following:

  • Completes hourly patient care rounds, anticipating patient needs proactively

  • Maintains patient and family privacy and confidentiality

  • Responds to patient and family requests, including answering patient call lights in a timely manner

  • Seeks registered nurse assistance to meet patient/family needs when necessary.

  • Communicates in a respectful manner with all members of the interdisciplinary team

  • Monitors patient and environment for safety concerns and immediately reports changes to RN/licensed nurse

  • Maintains a safe and clean patient care environment

  • Follows Infection Prevention Practices

Proper hand washing demonstrated 100% of the time

Utilizes two patient identifiers for proper patient identification prior to all specimen collections

  • Follows Safe Patient Handling principles to maintain safety for both patients and staff

  • Documents aspects of care on approved forms or electronic medical record

  • Participates as a member of the Interdisciplinary team to meet patient/family and unit/department needs

  • Proactively provides assistance to others

  • Performs delegated responsibilities and demonstrates willingness to adapt to changing unit demands

  • Provides care appropriate to age group of patients on assigned unit(s) as described in the relevant unit profiles

  • In collaboration with the Nursing Manager/Director and Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nursing Practice Specialist/Nursing Professional Development Specialist, identifies and meets learning needs, including:

  • Completes annual required training

  • Updates knowledge through periodic in-services

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Knowledge and Skills:

  • Successful completion of the literacy exam with a score of 80% or better (PCA Training Program candidates only)

  • CPR training required

  • Knowledge of English language sufficient to read, speak, and write accurately

  • Knowledge of simple arithmetic

  • Ability to lift and transport patients using the appropriate physical technique in a safe manner for the patient and self, according to Safe Patient Handling Guidelines

  • Ability to master basic computer skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors and hospital personnel

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

Experience:

  • Six months experience as a Nursing Assistant or is a Nursing Student currently enrolled in a formal program who has successfully completed at least one clinical rotation or is currently enrolled in, and successfully completes, the NWH Patient Care Associate Training Program

Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations (if applicable):

  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant preferred

VIEW JOBS 11/28/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-02-26T00:00 GENERAL SUMMARY: Organize workflow and prioritize processes to meet surgical schedule; process, inspect, assemble, and sterilize surgical instrumentation, loaner equipment, and supplies for the Operating Rooms, Maternity, Emergency Department and throughout the hospital; perform chemical, mechanical, and biological testing of disinfection and sterilization equipment. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1.Prioritize instrument decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and surgical case picking, based on assessment of instrument requirements for the surgical schedule. 2.Assist and collaborate with the Operating Room staff in the revision of surgical instrument kits. 3.Act as resource for technicians for instrument identification, kit assembly, and other department processes. 4.Act as preceptor in the orientation, training, and evaluation of new staff, clinical students, and volunteers. 5.Manage loaner instrumentation process. 6.Monitor total joint and other consignment instrumentation for completeness. 7.Verify sterilization cycles, biological tests, and associated documentation. 8.Complete daily shift report; actively participate and communicate status and updates to other shifts. 9.Pick supplies and/or instruments for surgical cases utilizing surgeon specific preference cards, prioritize and set up case carts in Operating Room according to the surgical schedule. 10.Perform the disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, assembly and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and other equipment. 11.Inspect instrumentation, ensure proper function, assemble instrument kits, and prepare instruments/kits for sterilization. 12.Load, operate, monitor, and complete documentation for all decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and monitoring equipment. 13.Perform and document all chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring of sterilizers and other equipment. 14.Respond effectively to emergency case requirements of the surgical team and other departments. 15.Assess instruments, components, and supplies for adequate levels required for the assembly of kits, and request necessary replacements in a timely manner. 16.Stock adult and pediatric code carts, intubation boxes, and latex allergy bins. 17.Utilize a variety of computer systems. 18.Function independently in the absence of the Manager or Supervisor; act as charge person when necessary. 19.Maintain certified status (C.R.C.S.T.) by accumulating continuing education units to meet status criteria. 20.Other duties as necessary. High school diploma or equivalent education required. Effective written and verbal communications skills required. Minimum of 3 years of Central Supply/Central Processing experience required or experience in Operating Room as Surgical Technician acceptable.
