Position SummaryWillamette Valley Cancer Institute is looking for a Patient Benefit Representative for their main clinical Hub in Eugene, OR. As a Patient Benefit Representative, you will work with patients and insurance companies to coordinate benefit administration for surgeries related to their Cancer Care Journey. You will also assist them in repayment plans to help minimize the additional financial stress of oncology treatments. Previous experience working with medical insurance is required, along with a compassionate heart for service. Come be an advocate and guide for our patients!

Under general supervision, responsible for educating patient on insurance coverage and benefits. Assess patients' financial ability; may educate patient on assistance programs. Updates and maintains existing patient new insurance eligibility, coverage, and benefits in system. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards, and US Oncology's Shared Values.


  • Prior to a patient receiving treatment; obtains insurance coverage information and demographics; educates patient on insurance coverage, benefits, co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses. Assess patients' ability to meet expenses and discusses payment arrangements. May educate patients on financial assistance programs as well as identify sources and provide assistance with completing forms. Based upon diagnosis, estimated insurance coverage, and financial assistance, completes Patient Cost Estimate form. Completes appropriate reimbursement and liability forms for patient's review and signature. Forwards appropriate information and forms to billing office.

  • Responsible for obtaining referral approvals and authorizations for certain clinical and laboratory services.

  • Review patient account balance and discuss with the patient.

  • Ensure that patient co-pay amount is correctly entered into system (or conveyed), allowing front desk to collect appropriately.

  • Stays current on available financial aide. Develops professional relationships with financial aide providers. Networks with financial aide providers to obtain leads to other aide programs.

  • Adheres to confidentiality, state, federal, and HIPAA laws and guidelines with regards to patient's records.

  • Maintains updated manuals, logs, forms, and documentation. Performs additional duties as requested.

  • Other duties as requested or assigned.


Experience and Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum one (1) year medical office, insurance verification/claims/billing experience required. Two to three years (2-3) experience, in specialty medicine, preferred.

  • Oncology experience preferred.

  • Proficiency with computer systems and Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of CPT coding and HCPS coding application.

  • Must be able to verbally communicate clearly and utilize the appropriate and correct terminology.

  • Must successfully complete required e-learning courses within 90 days of occupying position.

Req ID: 167116 JOB SUMMARY Assists in coordinating the activities between scheduling, insurance verification and pre-certification. Acts as a clinical liaison with physician practices interacting with pre-visit services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Pre-registers/registers patients with accurate patient demographic, financial data. Upon registration, address co-pay (including collections of monies), co-insurance, for scheduled appointment/procedure, etc. May register patients using a mobile cart that is taken into patient rooms or other areas. * Verifies coverage and ensures all insurance requirements are met, as well as obtaining all prior authorization and/or referrals as appropriate prior to patient arrival. * Responds to customer's inquiries. * Assists with departmental coverage as needed. * Manages daily appointment schedules which may include reminder calls and calling all referrals. * May transport patients utilizing escort or wheeled transport equipment. * Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: * High School diploma or equivalent preferred. EXPERIENCE/TRAINING: * One year of medical office or related customer service experience required. * Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Terminology and CPT/ICD-10 coding preferred. * Knowledge of insurance process and regulations preferred. OTHER SKILLS: * Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Outlook preferred. * Must be able to manage conflict effectively and professionally. * Excellent time management skills, with an emphasis on meeting time sensitive deadlines. * Good customer service skills and good interpersonal skills.
