Serves as the face to face point of contact for the patient at the emergency department. Obtains all necessary information to register and financially clear patients. Greets patients/family members and obtains and/or verifies relevant information in the process of registering and financially clearing patients for service delivery. Required to do bedside registration in patient rooms. Enhances the patient experience throughout all patient interactions by serving as the customer service point of contact at the point of service by demonstrating knowledge of Sutter's Health system and service offerings. Acts as the hospital operator and arrives patients to the Emergency Department. Responsible for collections when possible of co pay and deductibles. High school diploma or GED required. Medical Terminology recommended. Must remain calm in stressful situation.

Performs necessary clerical duties that include scanning of clinical documentation. Demonstrates the ability to operate basic office equipment, fax machine, multi phone lines, computer, copier, etc.

Responsible for supporting the success of a high-performing shared services organization by helping to champion and drive the long-term MFSS vision. Helps foster an environment in which continuous improvement in business processes and services is welcomed and recognized. Participates in programs and in using tools in support of building a high performance culture via the standard MFSS responsibilities (e.g. performance measurement, people development, customer relationship management, etc.).

Experience

  • Experience within a hospital or clinic environment, an insurance company, managed care organization or other financial service setting, performing financial counseling, financial clearance and/or customer service activities as typically acquired in two years

  • Completion of regulatory/mandatory certifications and skills validation competencies preferred

  • Minimum six months Emergency Room experience preferred

  • One year acute Emergency Department experience as an admitting clerk(registration)

Knowledge

  • General knowledge of patient access functions in acute and non-acute settings preferred

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology recommended

  • Working knowledge and understanding of insurance terminology desired

Skills

  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage frequent in-person patient contacts while effective maintaining and documenting data in the patient registration systems

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multiple computer systems, such as patient registration/accounting systems, document imaging, scanning, payment posting, proprietary payer websites and data quality monitoring, both accurately and efficiently

  • Strong data entry skills required

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and active listening skills

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in dealing with internal and external customers

  • Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Sutter Health

  • Accuracy and attentiveness to detail required

  • Must be able to set and organize own work priorities, and adapt to change

  • Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles

  • Ability to meet or exceed targeted customer service, productivity and quality standards

  • Fluency in both English and a minimum of one other language is preferred for this role to allow Sutter Health to better serve the community and patient population

  • Computer proficiency skills required

The hospital has a Critical Access Hospital designation, with 25 inpatient beds. There are 10 outpatient beds, a 12-bed ED, ancillary services (MRI, CT, Nuclear Med, Mammography imaging, lab, pathology, 24/7pharmacy coverage), surgical services (orthopedics, OB/GYN, general surgery, podiatry, ophthalmology, endoscopy), Family Birth Center, Intensive Care Unit, Medical-Surgical Unit, and an Outpatient Care Services Unit performing infusions, wound care and supporting outpatient procedures. The hospital also supports inpatient and outpatient physical, speech, occupational and rehab therapies. Sutter Lakeside's campus includes two hospital-based rural health clinics, a beautiful community garden and the only Rehab Mobility Park in this part of the state. Lake County has a population of about 66,000 and is located in a fast-growing wine region only 2 hours northwest of Sacramento and 2 hours north of San Francisco. Under direct supervision by the Practice Administrative Manager, this position provides administrative support for patients and physicians in the Practice. The Patient Service Representative (PSR) is the initial point of contact for external physicians and the public at large. The incumbent must possess exceptional public relations/customer service skills and be able to communicate with patients and physicians in an effective manner. Primary responsibilities are to identify the needs of the caller and execute a plan to meet the needs for registration, scheduling, billing/claims inquiries, My Health Online support, and general questions. In addition to being able to assist in resolving issues and improving quality of care, to ensure necessary authorizations are obtained prior to patient visits, to check-in and check-out patients, to post payments in real time, to update patient demographics, and to troubleshoot any billing problems that may arise. Education: High School diploma or equivalent required. Knowledge: Minimum of two years customer service experience, preferably within a health care environment. Experience working with patients and physicians, using IDX and Epic preferred. Experience with busy phone lines also strongly preferred. Skills: Requires exceptional communication and customer service skills, strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and manage a great number of details and multi-task with strong follow through are mandatory. Ability to take initiative, learn quickly and actively, participate as part of an administrative team also mandatory. Computer proficiency with MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as an ability to learn new programs with ease. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of staff, volunteers and the general public. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable with people in all stages of health and healing.
