  • Under the direction of the Supervisor of Patient Access, registers patients in the Emergency Department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: ensuring a customer friendly environment between Saint Mary's Hospital and patients, visitors, and physicians upon initial contact; process registration functions for patients entering the health care organization through the emergency department; secures all information necessary for internal operations; introduces patients to the environment, explains policies, secures signatures and all other key information needed to complete billing and collection functions; collects or arranges for co-insurance and/or other deposit payment amounts; refers self-pay patients to financial counselors; answers patient questions.

High diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree in business, health care administration or other similar field preferred.

Strong customer service and excellent verbal, spelling and communication skills required. Other requirements include knowledge of PC operations in a Windows environment, strong keyboarding skills, basic medical terminology, knowledge of ICD 9/10 codes, and strong knowledge of third party payer requirements for billing and precertification. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

VIEW JOBS 12/13/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-03-13T00:00 * Responsible for the coordination/facilitation of all activities associated with the Patient Access/Financial Services functions with which manager is directly responsible. Insure maximum productivity and accuracy is achieved in daily operations. Provide guidance and support to staff.RESPONSIBILITIES: * Coordination of all staff functions to include staffing, payroll, scheduling/proper coverage of all shifts/days. Set goals for work completion in accordance with established policies and guidelines. * Evaluate individual and department performance via evaluation process. Counsel and discipline individuals/department as necessary; interview/hire and recommend termination. * Schedule and conduct department meetings on a regular basis, maintaining appropriate records/minutes. * Work with management/staff to establish measure and control quality initiatives using established quality techniques. Establish policies and procedures as necessary to support quality control. * Understand and perform all functions related to department; assist in daily operations as necessary. * Keep informed of all pertinent internal and external information/policies/updates; insure compliance to state, federal and third party requirements pertaining to department functions. Attend seminars and workshops as scheduled. * Prepare statistical/status reports and special projects for department, management and others as required. * Insure optimal performance of all related systems/technology for department; work with Information Services on system projects/implementation and any technology-related issues. * Promote effective working relationships and work cooperatively as a part of the department to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. * Make efficient use of work time to accomplish assignments as well as the ability to accept or respond to change in the work environment in a way that promotes the department's goals and objectives. * Perform other similar duties as required or requested. REQUIREMENTS: * Knowledge and ability to use PC and other technology required in the completion of daily responsibilities. * Working knowledge of File Transfer Protocol [FTP] to perform downloading and uploading functions. * Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills * Ability to function effectively under pressure: ability to use good judgment and make timely decisions * Demonstrates effective leadership skills in words and actions * Knowledge of all state, federal and third-party billing/registration regulations and requirements * Familiarity with Credit & Collection policies/Fair Debt Collection law. * Maintains patient confidentiality * Knowledge of medical terminology * Ability to work rotating shifts and/or expanded hours * Ability to function as department coordinator for any PAFS department as established in rotation plan * Effective use of time management/able to establish and set priorities and make independent decisions * Excellent organizational and analytical skills * Requires knowledge and use of reference materials as provided in a multi-faceted environment i.e. manuals, memos policies and procedures. * Ability to work in a business environment that requires the accessing of information from many sources, locations and media. * Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures. * Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility. * Associates degree preferred * One to three years experience in a supervisory capacity in the healthcare field or five years progressively responsible work experience in a Patient Accounts, Access or related setting.
