We are seeking a Financial Counselor to join our Patient Access Department at Rush University Medical Center!

This is a Full Time position
80 hours every two weeks, benefit-eligible

Day Shift: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM

Monday to Friday

Position Highlights:

The Financial Counselor is responsible for providing a welcoming, high quality and supportive clinic service experience for patients, families, visitors and staff. The position is responsible for greeting, triaging patients to the kiosk, assisting the patient in use of the kiosk and responding to the needs of these customers by providing information, high quality service and support in a timely manner. Individuals in this position are expected to behave in a positive and enthusiastic manner as they are often the first contact patients and visitors will have with Rush. In all interactions, the Financial Counselor will be mindful of Rush's ICARE values of innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect and excellence, and will exemplify the Rush mission, vision, and values and act in accordance with Rush policies and procedures. Position Responsibilities:

  • Identify/counsel potential and repeat/recurring bad debt patients to prevent the rendering of non-urgent care services. Offer payment options to patients based upon policy and procedure.

  • Identify potential charity and grant patients, assist patients with completing eligibility applications, make eligibility determinations (up to $5000 is actual or estimated charges), and notify patients of decisions.

  • Make patient payment arrangements.

  • Investigate additional payment sources.

  • Accept payments.

  • Serve as customer service resource for walk-in patients in hospital lobby/patient registration area.

  • Handle customer service phone calls (pertaining only to prospective services and in-house patients).

  • Provide price estimates to patients, physician offices and ancillary departments.

  • Complete cross training to be a Registration Specialist.

  • Complete daily and weekly volume/productivity management reporting.

  • Participate in/assist with quality management process(es).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Quality Goals:

  • 100% of accounts requiring patient payment arrangements are concluded with a payment schedule in place prior to the end of the "Bill Hold" period.

  • 90% of Customer Service phone are remedied at the time the call is received.

Monitoring:

  • Supervisor/Manager reviews work queue of accounts and various reports.

Position Qualifications Include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • 2 years of previous experience in a healthcare environment as a Registrar, Biller/Collector or Financial Counselor.

  • Required to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in securing governmental and non-governmental accounts for payment.

  • Working knowledge of creating and maintaining spreadsheet based reports is a requirement.

  • Strong organizational skills and multi-tasking skills

  • Ability to set appropriate priorities in a dynamic environment

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Collaborate and work well with employees at all levels

  • Communicate effectively and in a positive manner, both orally and in writing

  • Good computer skills

  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology

  • Possesses a thorough understanding of insurance plans (benefits) and contracts (in/out network) and be able to explain coverage-related concepts to patients; i.e. out of network.

  • Understands more completes concepts as they pertain to registration, insurance and financially securing an account

  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office software with the ability to create and manipulate documents and spreadsheets.

  • Proficient bi-lingual skills a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required * Knowledge of patient family care giver support, including the necessary knowledge, experience and clinical skills at a level acquired through completions of a Master's degree. * Licensed Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Professional Counselor preferred. * Demonstrated ability to manage a patient family caregiver support caseload typically acquired through minimally one to three years of progressively more responsible experience in a hospital rehabilitation center for individuals with physically disability. * Analytical ability necessary to solve complex administrative and clinical problems. Ability to evaluate needs of patient populations and develop programs to meet those needs. * Interpersonal skills necessary to motivate and provide direction as well as represent the SRAlab outside of the Institute to community groups and officials of health and welfare agencies.
