Summary

Sorenson Communications is seeking qualified ASL/English interpreting trainees to participate in a temporary employment and training opportunity. The Pathways Program is designed to help prepare trainees for possible future employment in Video Relay Service interpreting at Sorenson Communications. Temporary trainee positions are available in centers throughout North America.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Effectively interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English;

  • Maintain, as applicable, compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements;

  • Demonstrate full compliance with Pathways and Sorenson Communications standards and policies, FCC regulations and the RID Code of Professional Conduct;

  • Demonstrate full compliance with Sorenson Communications customer service guidelines;

  • Demonstrate full compliance with Pathways and Sorenson Communications attendance policy;

  • Accurately and fully complete all program requirements and activities, assigned tasks/duties, projects, paperwork, and homework by due dates and within approved guidelines;

  • Fully participate in all program elements, including but not limited to: program and mentor meetings, trainings, interpreting activities, skill development activities, mock and sandbox interpreting, observation, and supported/supervised interpreting, assessments, etc. by due dates and within approved guidelines;

  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, in order to meet the demands of the Pathways Program and the VRS industry;

  • Possess the ability to quickly learn and implement new skills and knowledge as well as adapt to new and changing technologies;

  • Work effectively in a team environment; receive support from and provide support to colleagues;

  • Possess the ability to work effectively in an environment with oversight that may include, but is not limited to: call monitoring, mentoring and evaluations/assessments;

  • Possess the ability to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic, highly regulated environment;

  • Enhance interpreting skills through continued education training;

  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to complete additional duties and assignments on an ongoing basis; and

  • Satisfactorily complete benchmark requirements established by the Pathways Program for the duration of the employment term.

Experience/Education/Certifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Completion of at least one pre-requisite:

  • Completion of COMPASS Program with SVRS recommendation;

  • Completion of Sorenson New Hire Screening with SVRS and/or Pathways recommendation.

  • Physical Demands:

  • Sit for extended periods of time at a desk using computer and video equipment while processing VRS calls or completing program requirements

  • Communicate, participate in meetings, mentoring, and training in ASL

  • Interpret in ASL and spoken English for extended periods of time

  • Possess the ability to work in a variety of environments and lighting arrangements, fully understanding that video relay work must be structured to present the interpreter in the best physical light possible.

The PDP is designed to introduce candidates to the technical, administrative, and program management aspects of highway engineering in the agency. During this developmental program, the employee will be expected to complete three major components including apprentice experience, developmental assignments, and a professional development academy. The apprentice experience will occur in both the FHWA's Federal-Aid Division Offices and Federal Lands Highway (FLH) Division Offices where the candidate receives on-the-job training through a structured set of learning experiences described in the participant's developmental plan. Several developmental assignment options may include the following: design, construction, project development, environment, safety, pavements, materials, research, ITS, bridge, traffic operations, hydraulics, preventive maintenance, access management, utilities and R/W, planning, surveys, geotechnical, value engineering, etc. The ideal candidate has completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering within the last two years (veterans have up to six years) of the closing date of the announcement or are current graduate degree students, who are anticipating graduation in Fall 2019.
