Under the general direction of the Medical Director, assists in all aspects of anatomic pathology. Describes and prosects all surgical specimens types and complexities for histological examination.
Preparation, gross description, and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens
Must meet standards of productivity and established deadlines
Ensures the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the department to include proper handling of all tissue samples/protocols
Flexibility in scheduling is required

May be asked to provide technical guidance to grossing technicians in techniques, instrumentation and organization of work
Adheres to laboratory and surgery center quality control policies, and ensures documentation of all quality control activities

Participates in continuing education programs provided by CPL
Maintains required certification maintenance
Scope: Promotes quality client/patient relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model for behavior.
Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. Works with minimal direction; consults with pathologists, technologists, and general supervisor as needed.
Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and laboratory clients. Operates general laboratory equipment, including by not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, cassette printers, and tissue processors. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods.
Required Graduate of a Baccalaureate or Masters Pathologist Assistant program from a NCCLS accredited institution and have successfully passed the ASCP BOC certification.
Anatomic Pathology/Histology laboratory environment with minimum one year experience grossing all tissue types from simple to complex.
Ability to work as a professional, fostering professionalism, growth and teamwork.
Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment by organizing and prioritizing time and resources in order to produce the most effective work performance. Ability to assess work tasks, recognize limitations and request assistance when appropriate.
Organizational skills and ability to adapt to a busy, fluid work environment. Knowledge and dexterity required to perform gross dissection and description of all surgical specimen types. Knowledge of technical oversight needed to provide assistance to other anatomic pathology staff.
Knowledge of safety requirements. Ability to recognize and correct hazardous conditions. The ability to read and understand oral and written instructions.
The ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly.
Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Anatomic Pathology Processing Supervisor
Requires light to medium lifting
Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment.
May encounter hazards common to a pathological laboratory and come into contact with contagious pathogens and various laboratory chemicals. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
