Key Responsibilities:

The Patent Paralegal position reports to Microchip's IP Counsel. In this position, the successful candidate will:

  • Update and maintain Microchip's electronic patent docketing database;

  • Review and track incoming correspondence from outside counsel;

  • Communicate with inside counsel and staff on patent application preparation, filing and prosecution matters;

  • Communicate with inventors regarding approval and filing of draft patent applications, proposed responses to office actions and recommendations to file continuation/divisional applications;

  • Track deadlines for pending patent applications and issued patents, including deadlines for relevant milestones at allowance of claims and renewal fee windows;

  • Instruct outside counsel and vendors regarding payment or non-payment of issue fees and maintenance fees;

  • Generate various reports from the patent docketing database as requested;

  • Process certain emails and requests that come to the Legal Department email inbox;

  • Support transfer of IP to and from Microchip, including gathering and recording necessary assignment documents and importing relevant data and documents into Microchip's docketing database; and

  • Perform other duties at the discretion of Microchip's General Counsel and IP Counsel.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Have experience with patent docketing software (Anaqua preferred);

  • Be extremely organized and able to prioritize numerous tasks to meet deadlines with time constraints;

  • Have strong attention to detail;

  • Be prepared to write and proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical and typographical errors;

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of attorneys, staff, and inventors;

  • Be improvement and process oriented; and

  • Work well in a collaborative team environment.

Undergraduate degree highly desirable, but not required; excellent academic credentials.

Mandatory computer skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, patent docketing database software, and video conferencing.

The successful candidate will preferably have:

  • At least 3 years' experience with patent docketing and prosecution support;

  • Experience in the semiconductor industry;

  • Foreign and PCT filing experience;

  • In-house experience; and

  • Litigation support experience.
