Sorrento Therapeutics is seeking an experienced patent agent to join its growing in-house legal team. As a Patent Agent, you will support all aspects of Sorrento's patent portfolio. Specifically, your primary responsibilities will include drafting and prosecuting patent applications worldwide, developing global patent strategies and managing day-to-day IP activities to support multiple oncology and chronic pain products in pre-clinical and clinical development. This role requires the development of partnerships with R&D and clinical teams as well as within the Legal Department



  • Prepare, file and prosecute patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office

  • Perform prior art database searches, evaluate patentability and conduct freedom-to-operate/clearance projects

  • Work with and mentor scientists and clinical staff to enhance IP culture and develop channels to obtain input in supporting patent activities

  • Review technical manuscripts, posters and other materials intended for publication

  • Organize and coordinate invention disclosure tracking, review and evaluation

  • Work with management to prioritize invention disclosures and refine global patent portfolio strategy

  • Support competitive intelligence and IP monitoring programs

  • Assist attorneys on transactions, litigation, post-grant proceedings and other IP counseling matters


  • A PhD or equivalent advanced degree in molecular biology or other related disciplines, including chemistry, biochemistry, immunology, cellular biology and biotechnology

  • 2+ years of experience handling patent prosecution directly related to the life sciences industry and conducting prior art database searches for patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent analytical skills and business judgment

  • A strong drive and willingness to own projects and see them to completion

  • Practical experience in therapeutic antibody development is a plus, but not required

Duties & Responsibilities: * Manage patent and trademark prosecution dockets * Organize and file U.S. and PCT applications and responses * Report newly received invention disclosures and maintain database of invention disclosures * Administer the patent award program and ensure timely payments to inventors * Monitor third-party patenting activities and perform competitive intelligence searches * Support Patent Review Board and maintain filing decision lists * Coordinate filing activities with U.S. and foreign counsel Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the basic knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. * • Working knowledge of USPTO and PCT rules and procedures * IP docketing experience (familiarity with CPI database a plus) * Ability to work independently and take the initiative to accomplish objectives in a timely manner * Demonstrated team player with willingness to collaborate and perform tasks outside of immediate job description when necessary to benefit the department as a whole.
