The City of Irvine seeks experienced individuals with strong animal medical care experience, to provide paraprofessional medical care and treatment for all animals of the Irvine Animal Care Center, and assist with all aspects of Animal Care Clinic operations including facility maintenance, data management and customer service.
This position is Extended Part-time with a schedule requirement of 30-32 hours per week.
Future Extended Part-time and Part-time positions in this classification and the Veterinary Assistant classification may be filled from this recruitment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this position.
These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Examine animals entering the facility to assess health and temperament, breed and age.
Perform intakes, conduct general health checks and physical exams, report findings to Veterinarian or Senior Registered Veterinary Technician.
Perform routine medical treatments ordered by Veterinarians including calculating drug dosages; administering medication, immunizations and fluids orally or through injections (SC, IM, IV); preparing and maintaining IV catheter and fluid lines;and other duties such as checking incisions, checking and applying splints, de-worming, bathing, grooming, flea and tick removal, ear flushing, FeLV/FIV testing, skin scrapes, and lab work.
Assist Veterinarians in administering medical treatment to shelter animals, including exotic animals; restrain and handle a variety of species.
Collect blood, urine and tissue samples.
Assist Veterinarians during surgery by administering anesthesia, ensuring that correct instruments, monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, monitors, scopes, and breathing apparatus are operable.
Monitor animals during and after surgery.
Assist with admissions, discharges and surgical releases.
Communicate necessary medical counseling, follow-up and/or discharge instructions to the public and potential adopters.
Provide first aid and emergency treatment to animals in the absence of a Veterinarian and determine the need for immediate treatment.
Perform compassionate and humane euthanasia for impounded animals as directed.
Oversee the maintenance of clinic facilities, hospital equipment and use of medical instruments.
Clean and sanitize clinic cages, kennels, exam rooms, surgical areas and necessary equipment.
Provide leadership, technical support and training for part-time staff and volunteers by coordinating assignments, establishing timelines and providing feedback for performance evaluations.
Answer questions regarding animal care from staff, volunteers and community members.
Maintain effective relations with other shelter employees and others contacted during the course of work.
Respond to public information requests and inquiries.
Receive bite reports and notify/dispatch Animal Control Officers.
Assist with coordinating the transport of sick or injured animals.
Assist with Foster scheduling, placing animals into foster care and gathering necessary supplies.
Prepare, maintain and update animal health and various records, signage and information pertaining to medical cases and procedures.
Monitor and maintain inventory of medications, equipment and clinic supplies, stock supplies and process orders.
May transport animals off-site for specialized veterinarian appointments.
Hours: Weekend, evening and holiday availability is required.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with college coursework or post-high school training in animal health, behavior, animal care or closely related field, and one year animal shelter or veterinary assistant experience, or any combination of education and experience that provided equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
State licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician required for RVT Specialist vacancies; some coursework preferred for Veterinary Assistant vacancies.
Ability to lead and train others and to provide interpretation and guidance regarding the application of established clinic and hospital policies, procedures and standards, desired.
Ability to work cooperatively with community groups, volunteers and City staff, while utilizing excellent conflict resolution skills, interpersonal and written communication skills.
Ability to multi-task in a busy animal shelter environment with exposure to a variety of domestic/wild animals with varying degrees of dander, fur and feathers; willingness to work with any animal species.
Strong organizational and computer skills to maintain accurate records, files and schedules.
Requires a valid California driver's license.
Ability to push, pull, drag, lift or carry equipment/supplies (weighing up to 50 lbs.), and ability to lean, stoop, twist, bend, and kneel in the performance of job duties.

THE DEPARTMENT Community Services The Community Services Department has developed over the City's history into an award winning mixture of programs and services.
