This will include actively participating and supporting primary clinical teams. The Medical Assistant behaves in a professional manner, and consistently demonstrates and promotes the values of the organization. The Medical Assistant will work with and receive supervision from the Practice Administrator, physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Actively participates in maintaining and/or improving quality improvement initiatives, including but not limited to the Physician Billing computer system and patient satisfaction survey.

Maintains high level of competence on Physician Billing computer system.

Utilize computer system to schedule appointments and track referrals.

Opens and closes office as required.

Assists in capturing patient demographic information.

Takes active role in facilitation of team approach to functions within the department:

  • Attends departmental meetings.

  • Actively participates as a team member in resolution of problems as they are identified.

  • Analyzes current procedures, bringing suggestions for improvement to the attention of team members and supervisors for consideration.

Conducts pre-visit planning by reviewing and updating the patient's medical record prior to the appointment with recent test results and correspondence and determines needed services per practice protocol.

Confers with the physician, NP or PA regarding any incomplete patient tests/consults or other incomplete orders to the patient visit.

Prepares patients for the examination and treatment by escorting them from the reception area to the exam room prior to the provider entering the exam room.

  • Height, weight and vital signs

  • Update medication list

  • Update allergies in record

  • Update personal, family and social history

  • Inquire about smoking status

  • Obtains the Chief Complaint for the visit

Provides other patient care services as needed/directed:

  • Keeps exam rooms clean

  • Maintaining clinical supplies in exam rooms

  • Cleans and autoclaves contaminated instruments

  • Gives injections or immunizations, within State approved scope of practice

  • Phlebotomy

  • Pulmonary Functions/Nebulizer

  • EKG

  • OB/GYN exams assist as needed

Disposes of Bio-Hazardous waste and regular waste per practice protocol.

Maintains supplies:

  • Medical supplies

  • Disposing of expired Sample medication

As appropriate:

  • Assists with scheduling outpatient testing

  • Pre-certifying patients for procedures and referral processing

  • Responds to patient communications within practice guidelines.

  • Refill medications per practice protocol.

Communicates and Coordinates with providers or Care Coordinators regarding:

  • Hospital discharge

  • ED visits

  • Consulting physicians

  • Community resources

  • Disease management

  • Patient Self management

  • Patient and/or family education on chronic conditions

  • Individualized patient care plan

  • Follow-up contact with patient as indicated to ensure compliance with recommendations, medications, labs or other testing as well as specialist visits.

PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at time). Requires continual use of fingers for patient care, writing and computer entry. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasional requirement to lift up to 25 pounds. Occasionally push cart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Regularly requires ability to stoop, bend and reach above shoulder level. Requires ability to hear normal conversation and good general, near and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION:

Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program or two years similar experience.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years office experience in a similar setting preferred.

BLS/CPR: Current or within 60 days of hire; through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association

The telephone triage RN is responsible to collaborate with other care providers as needed to finalize the disposition of issues identified during the phone assessment. The position assists with immediate symptom management of patients or referrals to physicians or other needed resources.WORK PERFORMED JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Telephonically performs a focused assessment and uses standardized protocols that are evidenced based, determining patient disposition and timely care management. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responds to patient telephone calls in a timely manner-assuring that all telephone calls are managed immediately or within 2 hours of the initial telephone call. Completes a focused assessment of the patient without the advantage of a face to face encounter with patients or care giver of patient. Collects sufficient information relating to presenting problem including medical history, pattern or severity of symptom, current medications and any interventions that the patient may have already implemented at home. Utilizes the patient's medical record to review pertinent clinical information that is important history or to assure the clinical assessment is comprehensive. Uses evidence based protocols as a guide for appropriate disposition, and symptom management, care, and advice. Demonstrates the ability to assess and utilizes critical thinking to determine the urgency or acuity of the situation and instructs patients to seek emergency care when applicable. Demonstrates excellent communication skills in order to obtain pertinent information from the caller and demonstrates the ability to remain calm when the caller is anxious, afraid or unable to clearly articulate issues. Works in conjunction with care team registered nurses, advance practitioners, and physicians to provide the highest level of care to the patients. Communicates and collaboratively works with care teams registered nurses, advanced practitioners, and physicians; as necessary for treatment guidance. Collaborates with the patient's primary health care team to develop a plan of care to manage the symptom(s) when guidelines do not exist or when the triage RN determines that the situation may require additional orders or interventions. Creates helping relationship via the telephone through attentive listening and provision of comfort. Documents the assessment, plan and outcome of telephone interaction timely (by the end of the shift) in the electronic medical record. Provides and documents education or information when applicable to the patient and/or family within their scope of practice. Takes telephone and retrospective orders when applicable and documents orders per policy in the electronic medical record per guidance of the medical provider. Transmits orders to other departments or pharmacies to when applicable within the RN scope of practice Conducts telephone calls backs to patients requiring follow-up care when appropriate. Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions. Prioritize phone calls and coordinate care accordingly. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Takes an active role in facilitation team approach to functions within the department: * Attends departmental meetings * Actively participates as a team member in resolution of problems as they are identified * Analyzes current procedures, bringing suggestions for improvement to the attention of team members and supervisor consideration. Proficient in Electronic medical record program used in office. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS: Exposure to infectious diseases due to continual patient contact. Identified Risks: Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator. SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: NONE MOST COMPLEX DUTY: * Critical thinking and use of the nursing process. * Knowledge of the Oncology/Hematology diagnosis, treatment options, and symptom/side effect management. * Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and team members * Ability to prioritize work in an environment of constant change while meeting the needs of the office.
