  • Friday General Description

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), the Professional Tutor is responsible for providing academic assistance and learning-centered tutoring in the specific discipline to NCCC students. The tutor will be responsible for maintaining a record of each student tutored (appointment-based and walk-ins). All employees are expected to support the mission, vision, values, and goals of the Academic Center for Excellence and Niagara County Community College.

Professional Tutors with a strong background in writing will be responsible for assisting students with written communication skills (including, but not limited to, ENG or LIT courses). Tutors will help students understand the writing process, how to write thesis statements, how to organize and develop ideas, how to incorporate and cite research effectively (MLA, APA, & Chicago-Style), and how to correct papers for sentence fluency, grammar, punctuation and diction.

The rate of pay is based on the level of education the candidate possesses. For a Bachelor's degree or lower the rate of pay will be $20.60 per hour. For a Master's degree or higher the rate of pay will be $22.66 per hour.

The Academic Center for Excellence's hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8am

  • 9pm; Friday 8am

  • 4pm; Saturday 11am

  • 3pm.

Maximum number of hours for employees with more than one part-time position at NCCC may vary.

Typical Work Activities

  • Assist with the development of writing skills and the writing process at all levels

  • Provides one-on-one consultations to students

  • Engages students in conversations that help to draw out and express ideas

  • Reviews writing assignments and provides feedback

  • Communicates regularly with ACE Coordinator in regards to student progress

  • Participates in staff development training and meetings

  • Collaborates in establishing and maintaining ACE's objectives and procedures

  • Maintains confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Ensure offices and files are adequately secured on a daily basis

  • Serves as an effective "customer service" resource for student questions

  • Assists with data collection, student evaluations, and survey

  • Other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of ACE

  • Ability to follow instructions from supervisor or other faculty

  • Ability to create positive tutoring and learning environment within ACE

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree.

  • Knowledge of college-level composition (MLA & APA style & format).

  • Experience with/knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in the teaching and/or tutoring of writing.

  • Strong time management and organization skills.

  • Experience working with a diverse population.

  • Experience with and/or knowledge of services within Niagara County Community College.
